I am trying to formulate lubricants with the Laponite - RD thickener and its not giving the results I am looking for. The viscosity of the fluid is much lower then anticipated. I have made six samples with different concentrations (0.1%, 0.5% & 1.0%). The base solution is water, DEG, TEG and amines.
did you check the salinity and pH of your solution ? Laponite is a clay mineral, which forms a gel with a cardhouse structure, via electrostatic interactions between the faces / edges of the clay platelets. The surface charges of the clay are screened by the free ions in the electrolyte, changing the structure of the gel network, and consequently its viscosity, which is therefore salinity (and also pH) dependent.
Amines and/or alcohols are not good for thickeners based on layered aminosilicates. The link below shows you some alternatives for you problem, ASE thickeners are copolymers of (m)acrylic acid and acrylates. They are especially good for alkaline systems. HASA thickerner are also copolymers of (m)acrylic acid and acrylates but contain additionally some very hydrophobic monomers. Also these materials are specilized for alkaline systems. HEUR thickeners contains a polyethylene glycol with two hydrophobic tails at the end, in most cases linked by polyurethane chemistry. Also HEUR may work, but it can be cleaved by the amines in a long period. Classical thickeners are polyvinylalcohol and the celluloseethers. Also these polymers have a chance to solve your problem but the ASE and HASE thickeners might be the most appropriate. Acrylsol is the trade name from DOW but there are also other suppliers for these materials.
