My Beautiful Launderette was also made into a film starring a very young Daniel Day Lewis. It won awards as I recall. I thought it was excellent. I would suggest Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. novels, His language is very clear.
During the early part of the 20th Century, there were numerous school editions of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Cranford published. They were used to help immigrants arriving in America learn both English language and, to some extent, proper behavior. Thomas Reccio of the University of Connecticut published an article on them - “‘Charming and Sane’: School Editions of Cranford in America, 1905-1914.” Victorian Studies 45 (2003): 597-623. There is also the exceptionally fine BBC production of Cranford with Judi Dench to reinforce the narrative.
