A narrow insulin syringe should be the best option. However, if you need to use a larger or smaller instrument that might provide more options. You should be able to work out the best option once you decide on the best size to use,
To withdraw blood from 20g fish the, options depend on the purpose of the blood sample (parameters to be analysed)
(a) 1 ml insulin syringe with nondetachable needle: If this is used, the possibility of blood cells being ruptured (haemolysis) while emptying the blood from the syringe is high (due to pressure of pushing the blood through a very narrow needle). This can be used if the analysis is to be performed on serum but not plasma/whole blood.
(b) 2 ml syringe with 24 or 25 guage needle: Only well skilled and experienced persons can handle this model to withdraw blood from 20g fish with ease. I had done many times, it gives the option to remove the needle and empty the blood sample without damaging the blood cells.
Thank you very much for your response. With the 22 guage needle, I could not withdraw any blood from the fish. I will try and use the insulin syringe preferably with disposable needle, as suggested.
