I think you can use SEM. of course you have to made a cross section of sample, then deposit a gold coating on the cross section.
Make histological cross section, cut sections in microtome and stain them. Then you can use light microscopy to measure the thickness for cuticle wax. Please refer to our paper on Murraya koenigii, which explains that process and procedure.

Here it is. It is easier to identify the cuticle with proper stain (in LM) instead of B/W cross section SEM micrograph.
TEM is the best in you need to measure cuticle thickness. You will recognize the cuticle above the cell wall, it looks absolutely different.

you can find perfect TEM images with explanations. These articles are among the first ones that were found by Google ("fruit cuticle transmission electron microscopy"). For TEM of cuticle you can use any protocol or embedding medium, it will be safe.
