I am working on substantia nigra in rat brain slices that I treat with LPS and I would like to highlight activated astrocytes following the treatment but using another marker than GFAP. I have read that Vimentin or S100beta are good markers for activated astrocytes in rodent, did anybody already use them ?

Hi Pauline, I used both markers, vimentin as well as S-100 with good results. I agree with Josh you have to compare reactiv with non reactiv astrocytes. Most the time is easy to distinguish them especially when you use vimentin, because the staining intensity of rective astrocytes is stronger and depending of the kind of lesion the fibers are biger and sometimes longer. The soma could reach a size of small neurons. It could be a little bit mor difficult if you are looking for singele cells. Good luck!
