Are the components of DMEM media used for cell culture susceptible to UV degradation or modification? Is it advisable to keep the media under UV in the biosafety cabinet for a while? can that media be used later?
What i am pretty sure about that FBS is susceptible to UV degradation massively and actually most of the vitamins are degradable to so it is not advisable to keep the media for long time under UV , one method for preserving the media although it affects it slightly is dividing it into 50 ml portions and freezing it till its needed
Direct UV light will have damaging effect on many components (proteins, hormones, vitamins e.t.c.) of your culture medium. However, you should take into account that FBS composition is different from lot to lot. Also, if your culture medium is in a plastic or glass vessel it will be protected from standard laminar hood UV light. The plastics and glasses strongly attenuate the amount of UV that can get through.
Hello, i will like to put my little contribution regarding such a technical question! Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a sterilization method effective against bacteria and viruses while being non-thermal and non-adulterating in its mechanism of action. This makes UV irradiation attractive for use in sterilization of cell culture media.
