Students are delicates and have a formal and informal both type of relations with the teachers in a congenial environment. What are the best ways for them to motivate ?

-Awarding them for their good works?

-Certify them for their extra-curricular activities?

-Setting them free of the teachers bindings?

-Ensuring their a good ,learning and joyful environment?

I fully agree with Sabah Zaib mam. Students don't need big plans of future. They are aware and intelligent. The motivation is appreciating them honestly and frankly in presence of others. They like teachers who are friendly with them and with them they open up and teachers must ensure that they are truly promoting them to be successful in their careers. You choose any strategy but every strategy has honest appreciation within.

Dear Dr. Md Zafar Alam Bhuiyan , it is an interesting issue. All the points have an impact on motivation.

As per my opinion, the best way to motivate students is to really show them how academic success can positively impact their future - really illustrate the way in which their grades can make or break their future.

Invariably you hear others telling people what to do. A better approach would be asking "Why don't you..?" I believe most people already know what to do. If you ask a person on the street , they will give you all the right answers. Ask them are they doing it. Probably not. So what's missing is the motivation. Now the question is can we motivate people ? Answer is absolutely not. Why ? We can inspire people to motivate themselves. Motivation is action. I can't act for you. You gotta act for yourself but inspiration is thinking. When thinking changes, it starts reflecting in behavior. It's more lasting and prominent. That's what people are looking for. Aren't they ?

It raises two major questions :

1) Why do people get demotivated ?

2) Who or what motivates the motivator ?

Till we understand what motivates the motivator, we cannot get the autopilot & unless we get an autopilot, how long can we expect others to push us from outside ? It doesn't work.

Intrinsic/Autonomous motivation is the desired type of motivation for study as it is associated with deep learning, better performance and positive well-being completing a skill or activity based on personal interest and enjoyment not for external rewards but because you find it interesting & deeply valuable for yourself. You are there completely because that’s what you want to do. It is dependent on the fulfillment of three basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness.

We don’t have to motivate them. We have to support them in their motivation.

Ways to cultivate intrinsic motivation in students:

Begin by knowing how they see things. Identify and nurture what they need and want. See their perspective.The typical approach is I know how I see things & I use it on the kid. How about if you put that aside for the time being & ask them how do they see the situation. What as per them is important for them & once u know that, you can have so much better conversation in terms of trying to support them & move them forward with whatever we r trying to accomplish here.

A Higher Purpose. Students who feel that they are working towards the greater good, or something larger than themselves, may have an easier time staying motivated.

Model intrinsic behavior yourself. Educators’ demonstration of how they approach work, their expectations, values, and beliefs can be transmitted to students and facilitate their intrinsic motivation as we need to practice what we preach.

Educate them on the cause-and-effect relationships between what they are doing and things that happen in real life : When you are working on a certain activity, explain to the student why you are doing that specific activity and how it will help him/her in their everyday life.

Encourage students to compete against themselves. Just as a runner, jumper, or thrower not only competes against others but also tries to achieve a new personal record, intrinsically motivated students are always hoping to better themselves.

Teach self direction: Everyone feels a larger sense of accomplishment when you are able to do something all by yourself.

Let them take their own decisions : Obstacles will surely come in whatever we do but if we take our own decisions then we will carry it out with more conviction & we won’t blame anyone later on. It will build a sense of responsibility.

Direct with ‘can, may, could’ instead of ‘must, need,should’ : Autonomy-supportive teaching behavior would entail the use of words like: ‘you can learn this’, ‘maybe you could do it in this way’, ‘it is your choice’, ‘if you study this, it will increase your understanding of related conditions’. Phrasing comments and suggestions in the right way, i.e. which is not binding on the students, but gives them the chance to decide for themselves (hence autonomous), is very effective in enhancing their intrinsic motivation.

Provide choices: Children can be more intrinsically motivated if they have a say in how they are accomplishing a goal. Try not to make any activity a requirement.

Visualize and Conquer. Have your students visualize a moment in their lives when they felt very proud of themselves for an accomplishment. Then let them loose on a task.

Make every student feel effective & capable. This may be a simple point, but it’s surely one of the most important. Some students feel incapable of completing a task before they even try it. The power of “You can do it” has perhaps been diluted over the years. Try “You’re capable,” which speaks not only to the task at hand but to the student’s sense of self-worth.

Cooperation : Intrinsic motivation can be increased in situations where students gain satisfaction from helping their peers .

Help students trust themselves to succeed. When students trust themselves to succeed at a task, they are more likely to challenge themselves in other situations. Be sure to recognize student achievement in terms of personal worth and not just success on a particular assignment; this will encourage the student to carry that confidence into other learning situations.

Enable learners to believe that their work will lead to powerful effects. Students won’t remember everything you teach them so the point is not to memorize every fact and concept. We need to cultivate an academic work ethic of sorts, so that someday, that million-dollar idea won’t be so hard to realize.

Connect games and learning. You’ll agree that learning is fun. That’s why you are a teacher! But how do you expect her to feel that special little thrill you feel when you sit down in front of your morning crossword ? The truth is, she does feel the thrill – when she gets a new personal best in the 800 meter dash. Try to connect her motivation on the track with her motivation in learning. Acing the test may not make her feel quite as good as winning the championship, but the two drives are related.

Give emotional support : Create an environment of emotional support for the students which entails creating a warm, positive and sharing atmosphere where students feel safe to express their feelings, doubts and questions. Having positive interaction with the teacher is likely to make students more interested in the subject matter. Create an environment where they motivate themselves.

Give accurate and authentic constructive performance feedback. A large part of continued motivation is feedback, but be careful not to make it personal. They should change their behavior, not their self-worth, as a result of constructive criticism.Provide them positive feedback way like “ I really appreciate the great job that you just did.” Specifically say what it is. When something goes wrong, tell them how can they do it better the next time. Let’s learn from it.

Be genuinely interested in them .Respect them , Relate to them as human beings, talk to them in a way they feel that “Oh, This person is really interested in me..” Build a sort of a relationship where they can trust you & come & talk to you.

10 Teacher-Tested Ways to Increase Your Students' Motivation Quickly and Easily

1Children fulfill the expectations that the adults around them communicate. This does not mean that every student will score 100% on every test we write. It does mean that if you communicate to a child that he or she is failure, he or she will fail. If you communicate to that same child that he or she will succeed; you will often find that that is the outcome. With every opportunity, encourage your students that they are making progress in their language learning. Point out to them the areas in which you see progress and improvement. For areas in which a student struggles, try to portray a picture of what success will look like. Encouraging your students to visualize their success will aid them in accomplishing those goals you set before them.

2Making sure you are teaching to all the learning styles in your classrooms is another way to motivate your students. It is unrealistic to expect an auditory learner to be successful and motivated if her sole instruction comes from reading a textbook. Likewise, a kinesthetic learner will be frustrated listening to his teacher lecture class after class. Make sure, as you plan your lessons, that you are teaching to all the learning styles in your classroom. If you do, you will engage students who might otherwise struggle to pay attention in class.

3When a student disengages from class, it is a good opportunity for you the teacher to notice what methods you are using in class. Although some practices may be fine for most students, timed tests, independent learning time, self checking methods, for example, there will be students who not only do not connect with these methods but who suffer negatively when you use them in your classroom. If a student begins to disengage, be aware of the methods you are using and look for patterns. Though it is difficult to meet every need of a classroom full of language learners, you can take pains to avoid certain methods when it is possible to help certain students perform better in class. This will also help you be intentional about using a variety of methods with your class further engaging all of them.

4Sometimes motivating your students is as easy as changing the material you are using. For most teachers, the school chooses a curriculum that they expect each teacher to follow in his or her classes. Even when this is the case, it does not mean that you cannot bring additional resources to class. Sometimes students are turned off by the style or approach of certain curriculum authors. Bringing a different perspective into the class will reengage your students who are turned off by your current materials. In addition, it will challenge those who are already seeing success from the assigned curriculum.

5Varying your environment can also be just the thing a reluctant student needs to find fresh motivation. Field trips are always a great way to learn in a practical setting, but even if that is not possible, take your class outside for today's lesson. Your students may also benefit from a class meeting in the library or in another classroom. You can still meet your daily class goals even if you take your class beyond the classroom walls. Try setting your students to research at the library, observe another class, or listen to native speakers in a public area. There is always language to be learned, so meet your listening, speaking, and reading goals outside the confinement of students' tables.

6Providing students with accountability is an important element of being a teacher. Without the idea of a deadline and a grade, many students would never have the self-motivation that is required to successfully learn a language. Be clear with your students when you tell them your expectations. Make sure they know the deadline for a project’s completion and what standards you will use to assess that project. You may also consider contracting grades with your students who are at more advanced levels. When you contract grades, your students sign a contract which outlines the requirements to receive an a and a b. Do not give options for lower grades. The student selects which grade he or she will receive in the class and then must complete those requirements satisfactorily. From the start of class, your students know what they need to accomplish, and they know that their success is completely dependent upon themselves. This will get them to be self motivated learners and help them engage themselves in the learning process.

7Have you ever seen a child, or perhaps you have one, who is angelic when in public and a terror at home? Some young people have similar behavior patterns when it comes to the classroom. For you they misbehave repeatedly, but a substitute teacher would never know it. You can break them out of this pattern by bringing outside influences into your classroom. Invite a guest speaker or trade classes for a period with a fellow teacher. The change in style and authority, even for a short period, may be enough to spark some motivation in your students who have become accustomed to your teaching style and expectations.

8Competition is a great way to motivate students. We do not suggest posting grades publicly or otherwise embarrassing your students, but there are many ways to foster a friendly spirit of competition in your class. Games are fun for reviewing and they motivate and engage students. You can also group your class into teams and set them to a challenge. Who can collect the most authentic examples of the grammatical structure you are currently studying? Which team can write the most entertaining skit with this week’s vocabulary words? Whatever you are studying, there is some way to add some competition to the mix.

9One never fail motivational method you can use with your students is giving rewards. Tell your students that if everyone in class earns an 80% or higher on a test you will have a pizza party. Tell them that with successful completion of the class novel you wills spend a day to watch the movietogether. Even something as little as a sticker on a teenager’s paper can be enough to spark some giggles and winks but with it some fresh motivation. Design your rewards to your students’ personalities, and tell them what your plans are. Students look forward to even the simple pleasures that you can dole out on an ordinary day.

qFinally, though not as enjoyable as other techniques to motivate, consequences of certain actions can also be a motivator to students. Make your expectations clear, and communicate to your student what the consequences will be to certain behavior or work ethic. No one likes to be punished, but when positive reinforcement and lively change ups do not work, sometimes there has to be negative consequences to your student’s actions. Keep your students after school if you have to. Communicate with a child’s parents if possible and when necessary. Discipline should be a last resort motivator and only used sporadically.

Many good suggestions, and absolutely, a congenial environment is very helpful to keep students from resenting the experience.

My thinking is that there's more to it. Every student is different. Every student has his or her own interests and goals. Many of the courses they take are required, prerequisite courses, or part of the core curriculum. So I think it's very important for the prof, or other instructor, to make it clear why this material is relevant, to the interests of each student. If the student sees why the material is relevant, then motivation to learn should follow, and in fact, the student might take initiative to go beyond just the course material.

Easier said than done, I know. No matter what, many students end up having to take courses in which the material is just not of great interest to them. So in many cases, a good, congenial, friendly environment , as opposed to a threatening environment, is all the student can hope for, to keep from turning off.

Also, don't forget, your course is not the only course the student is taking!! Some courses seem to assume the student has full time to dedicate to just that one subject. This can create two types of problem:

1. Good students will have to manage their time, and won't be able to get the best scores on that subject, if it demands too much of their time. This will lower their GPA unfairly.

2. Not-so-good students, who are interested in that particular course, will indeed spend way too much time working it, and will do poorly in all their other classes. This is bad too. I had one roommate as an undergraduate who failed out of school, just for this reason. He spent all his time obsessing over physics lab reports, which that one physics prof made great demands for, and ignored all his other very important classes.

As i feel ,Motivation is of particular interest to educational psychologists because of the crucial role it plays in student learning. However, the specific kind of motivation that is studied in the specialized setting of education differs qualitatively from the more general forms of motivation studied by psychologists in other fields. Motivation in education can have several effects on how students learn and how they behave towards subject matter. Because students are not always internally motivated, they sometimes need situated motivation, which is found in environmental conditions that the teacher creates.

These Twenty Tips on Motivating Students will be helpful

1. Know your students' names and use their names as often as possible.

2. Plan for every class; never try to wing it.

3. Pay attention to the strengths and limitations of each of your students. Reward their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses.

4. If possible, set your room in a U-shape to encourage interaction among students.

5. Vary your instructional strategies; use lectures, demonstrations, discussions, case studies, groups, and more.

6. Review the learning objectives with your students. Be sure students know what they are expected to learn, do, know, etc.

7. Move around the room as you teach.

8. Make your classes relevant. Be sure students see how the content relates to them and the world around them.

9. Be expressive. Smile.

10. Put some excitement into your speech; vary your pitch, volume and rate

11. Give lots of examples.

I think can motivate the students by using many methods,so one of them is Providing students with accountability is an important element of being a teacher.
