By following the standard authorship guidelines, there is no problem.

I am acquainted with several cases that may cover different advisor behavior with respect to the subject above. While in the US, working on my PhD, my advisor was of the type that the first paper should have his name first and then the advisee "me", and this is changed when more papers are written. That was a rule that I had to abide by.

As for me, I encourage my students (undergraduate and graduate) to do an excellent job so that a publication results from the work. So far almost all my graduate students have published. As for where do they stand in the sequence of names, it is commensurate with the effort and time they put into the paper.

Students' research papers must be published with the student being the lead author and supervisors being co-authors. There is a policy in effect in my institution now.

Agree with Dickson that Universities and other educational institutions have their proprietary policies to avoid court problems.

When the student is a member of the research team and the researched topics lead to a united good, the the rules of extent of contribution apply.

It is recommended that rules be put in place for publishing and arranging the names for each university. The rules of the research centers should be set up by the supervising professors, so that scientific research does not become a source of disturbance and differences.

In france, the name or the student is first and the supervisor after. But as other recommenations have suggested there must be a code of conduct defining all the aspects related to supervision.

The governing outcome of the discussion is transparency in the relationship between advisor and advisee regulated through the research institutions' policies set in place. Actually at a higher level relationship, PHD phase, such transparency is fundamental when reaching to the Patent stage.

I agree with Prof. Hejase about the issue of transparency. An advisor is also a mentor who walks the advisee along the trail of preparedness for research.

When it comes to me, I will always support adding the advisor's name to the first (and any other) papers. Advisor's role that led to the successful publication of the paper shouldn't be forgotten.

Research scholar should be the first author and in any of the manuscript prepared from the research carried out under the guidance of an advisor must have his name.

Does anyone make sure that all authors understand university policy (or any other policy to be applied to decision making regarding authorship) at the start of the paper writting? If so, how is this task undertaken?

This discussion is very good. All in all, if the work is coming from the PhD or Masters work with a supervisor, it is imperative to add the supervisor an all papers.

The advisee is usually the lead author and the supervisor is the co-author.

But to avoid conflict, it is better that students and advisors are given these codes of conduct at the begining

While writing a thesis [MS] or dissertation {PhD], the university rules are provided in a document that shows all the regulations including definition of original work, role of advisor and advisee, and usually the advisor transparently instructs the advisee about the future paper writing and clearly states what is his/her position as author/co-author relationship. Moreover, when the research work is completed and inside the manuscript there is a statement which informs the reader that the work is the sole effort of the candidate and he/she is the sole owner of the work. So, the rest is mutual understanding when published.
