Education could include any form of adding value to those who seek to learn as compared to cultivation which includes beside the aforementioned the factor of humane caring to the overall welfare of the recipients!
I reckon in the presence of all pessimism cynicism and practical obstacles , one must resort to pragmatic practical '' cultivation'' of available resources and materialization of potentials
Which may not be possible through the intangible abstract ideas put forward by education.
Cultivation can also be tied to the concept of achieving "Consciousness" as was discussed in a different forum on RG. Being aware of oneself, of the boundaries and being able to disseminate value outside the boundaries of oneself is a challenge. Such a challenge can be nurtures through cultivation rather than education. Education is more of tactical move to assimilate knowledge while cultivation needs more of a strategic intent to do.
I like your analogy of "cultivation" in the context of learning. Indeed, if we do not cultivate then the education can become somewhat superficial, not really having lasting change, but just knowledge of topics at a specific time, but cannot be effectively applied to real-life problems.
Yes indeed, the idea of cultivation is worrying about the person as well and not only the learning process. Preparing persons with high integrity necessitates providing an integrated program where liberal arts meet strongly the sciences and technology.
Great, so if we add all necessary ingredients within what you asserted, we get more added value education. Unfortunately, today schooling is just given the marginal requirements forgetting about discussions deemed unnecessary.
I think one of the fruits of "cultivation" is reflected in Lady Bird Johnson's quote that portrays education as a loan to be repaid with the giving back of the gift of self.
From the day we were born until the day we die, we learn, but not all have an education. Even if everyone learns throughout life, it does not mean it has some education. Education is the development of intellectual faculties, moral and physical. Is that part of a person that influences thinking and activity around which it unfolds. Education is influencing the decisions that we make, our actions degree of objectivity with which we look at a situation, how we behave in our society, adaptability in the face of new situations.
Thank you Harshvardhan for the excellent resources shared. Also thanks to Dorina for her point of view. The concept of cultivation as has been discussed deal with providing the other (students or not) with an integrated view of education which results at the end with citizens who care and interact with their immediate environments as well as the community at large. Cultivation leads to educate with a purpose to improve not only society but knowledge per se to be more transcendental.
I also enjoyed these resources. The analogy of cultivation is a liked term in social sciences whe addressing education for it adds more on the attitude dimension.
Thank you Prof. Atrissi and I guess you are right, may be there are certain instances where you may feel like wasting time, but the social bonding is a must to keep track of reality.
The Roman politician and philosophical writer Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC -43 BC) transferred the meaning of the Latin word "cultura" (cultivation) from agriculture to the human mind (or soul), so that the Latin term "cultura animi" (cultivation of mind) came in use, as characteristic for a well-educated person. In Germany exists since 17th century a special educational ideal, called (German) Bildung, a concept which exist also in non-educational sense. Cultura animi, that means cultivation, has become in German traditions since the era of Enlightenment and Weimar Classic a moment of becoming a well-educated personality - in the sense of "Bildung" - which means that the process of developing is a process of inner forming soul and mind after an ideal - like the inconspicous seed of a flower gets in a process of developing the most wonderful rose. To express this in English is nearly impossible. The German "Bildung" is in English language (also) summarized under education. Whereas in Russian, in many East-European and in Scandinavian languages you can clearly express the difference between "Erziehung" (education as social interaction ) and "Bildung" (reached performance capacity of the individual after having developed his abilities, interests, knowledge and achievements by scheduled influence or school, respectively).
Seen in this light is the difference between culture ("Bildung") and Education in the sense of social interaction (also seen as the sum of actions between a group, or as process of transferring the cultural achievements of an older to a younger generation).
I like your comment Hein, specially your phrase" in the sense of "Bildung" - which means that the process of developing is a process of inner forming soul and mind"
