I am looking for medical-grade gelatin. Actually our hydrogel scaffold (Gelatin) may ultimately be transplanted in human. Is there any thing like medical grade and where can we purchase it?
Pharma grade gelatin is available. i think you can use both type A or type B from sigma Aldrich. The catgut (absorbable sutures) which is mainly made from collagen (extracted from submucosal layer of small intestine of cattle, sheep, goats or from beef tendon. chk this out http://www.raymongelatine.com/ or http://www.tradeindia.com/manufacturers/indianmanufacturers/pharmaceutical-grade-gelatin.html
Thanks all for your answers, Gaurav, I'll appreciate if you can tell me some detail; I mean the product full name or CAS etc so that I can search it on internet.
@Aless: I did manage to find something relevant. Actually people would usually use Pharma grade for implantation purpose and I think it is the same. Anyway, here is the link. This one really looks nice for implantation in human. http://nitta-gelatin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/beMatrix-Brochure.pdf Here is another link http://www.pbgelatins.com/
In case of fabrication of scaffolds to be potentially implanted in humans why not taking into account to use collagen derived from human placenta as provided by Sigma itself? Current biocompatibiliy tests on materials do not comprise the determination of the most common alpha-Gal xenoantigen which even in trace amount might introduce elements that could alter the fate of a scaffold of animal origin when implanted in humans.
Not sure if you are still looking for Pharma grade gelatin or not. My company produces a high grade gelatin used in medical devices. It has a low endotoxin count that is usually necessary for implanted devices.
Alex Biederman Could you please share the details. I am looking for Gelatin to be used in medical devices . I would need certification and whether it is FDA approved or not?
