In high speed steel M2 grade used for making tools like drills, rimmers and threading taps, two things are of paramount importance;

1. Primary carbides

2. Cell size

both of these are resulting during solidification in continuous casting and final forged/rolled product quality in terms of carbide size and banding and overall microstructure.Carbide banding in HSS M2 is checked as per SEP 1615 and grain size is checked in as quenched condition by Snyder graph method of ASTM E112.
