My "official" time distribution is 60% teaching (3x3 undergraduate load annually with 5 course preps), 30% research, and 10% service. I don't track my time carefully enough to tell if this is a fair estimation.

Last year, for example, I chaired 4 committees on campus, served on 3 national boards, and on 5 editorial boards. I was the book review editor for 2 journals. I'm not sure this takes up only 10% of my time.

For research, I submitted 1 program evaluation under contract, 9 book reviews, and 3 articles in the last academic year. I also lead a voluntary collaborative of 12+ academics at 9 or so institutions who conduct an annual research project with our students, and I directed 6 student research projects that were presented 10 times in the spring at different conferences. I'm not altogether sure that 30% of my time covers all of this.

So here I am, in July and off-contract, working daily from my office to get ti all done, and I love it! It sure beats the 30 years I spent helping entrepreneurs get rich on the backs of their employees!

Please allow me to confine my answer to the 3rd question:

I am about to retire after serving my university for nearly 33 years. What went on was much more teaching than research for personal ends "since I never sought promotion”. My teaching activities included: giving lectures & practical or laboratory classes and teaching students how to conduct research for a degree at both undergraduate & postgraduate levels.

I believe that what I did was an honest job because the focal point of work at any university must be the students. There has to be an emphasis upon the quality of the students who graduate from a university.

When a scholar spends most of the time on basic research in order to get promotion or a post, then what is left of his/her power is very little & this will harm the teaching/learning process.

I did some personal research but I published nothing out of it. I shall, hopefully, do that in the future.

Search and research are essential for all teaching.

Students taught me as much as I taught them.

In some 'teaching' universities (as oppose to 'research-type' universities), the ratio of your teach-to-research ratio is depending on how much research grants you have. If you obtain good research grants, you have more hours for research than teaching hours.

At my (Teaching) university, the required ratio is 60% teaching, 20% research, 10% university service and 10% community service.  It is a nice mix but good Teaching is required.  

it depends on the type of our profession

Research = 50%, teaching = 50% & Service=50%...Yes 150%, as academics are over-worked.

Professors in our university (without administrative designation) have these functions:

Teaching / Instruction = 65%

Research = 20%

Extension / Community Services = 10%

Support / Other Functions = 5%

For me personally I think they have almost the same ratio

I can manage about 10% of my work time towards research if I am fortunate.

I now have zero capacity in my 'day job' to get to research, as such all of my research is now undertaken at weekends and evening.

By the newest law in Croatia it should be: 45% teaching, 45% research and 10% institutional contribution.

We must include research in teaching so that what constitutes theoretical elaboration receives its support and verification.

I was head of the department, so the 100% was divided between administrative + teaching + research not equally but it depends on the daily responsibilities mainly teaching( under and post graduate) and then research followed by administrative or which come first option, Therefore I think more than 100% is needed to accomplish all of these activity and have to work overtime!!!.

I agree with David Wooff . I can doing my research work only out of job hour.

The two must be given equal weight, 50% to teaching and 50% to research work! Because your development and evolving for knowledge acquisition must be transferred to your student both at the under-graduate and post-graduate level.

Paul: Some universities dictate the ratio of Teaching to Research, For example, my university dictates 60% Teaching and 20% Research. (The other requirements are University service, Community service, and Church participation.)

Based on my experience in a private university - teaching: research: admin (including community work) are the main areas of academia work. Those who are given admin work are not expected to teach as many hours.

Lecturer:

teaching >70%, research&admin (30%)

Sr Lecturer& Prof:

teaching (30%), research&admin (70%).

Visiting Lecturer

25% time of a day (24 hours). (Because a visiting lecturer has a limited duties).

45% time of a day (24 hours). (When a complete research idea circulating in my mind).

About 10% research, 30% admin and the rest teaching

Not all teachers are Research-oriented and not all good researchers are good at teaching. So it is best for each faculty to make the choice so that their talent and capability are fully available to the student community.

It is very difficult to quantify or divide our time in terms of any ratio of the total time at work. Indirectly, I think it should reflect in our research publications, which should be at least one per year, and the time devoted to it will vary according to the type of research and it's objectives. Further it will depend on other assignments you have at hand. It can be nil on some days while on some days it may be 75 percent. So in the end, for me it should be cumulative of around 15-20 percent of our total time in a given calendar year.

I think 40% to teaching , and 60% to research

I think its 40% teaching to 60% research. Because in today environment teaching is more challenging and you have to make research to keep yourself update and satisfy your students and one other reason as I like research.

As a lecturer I spent 70% time on teaching and 30% on research due to busy schedule.

I want to spend more time on research to meet the up coming challenges ...

The ratio of teaching to research varies according to different universities, teachers and their activities, but in general in Iraqi universities, the ratio of teaching to scientific research exceeds. Personally, more than 70% of my academic duties are in teaching, while scientific research receives 25% of my academic activity.

Teaching is the utmost priority in my department, whereas research is a marginal duty, which one's only got time to, if teaching and service do not consume it all. Roughly, on average, the involvement with teaching corresponds to 65%, service to 25%, and research to hardly 10%.
