Both cell lines you mentioned have associated transfection kits that have been pre-optimized for the cell lines. Here they are for MCF7 (https://altogen.com/product/mcf-7-transfection-reagent-breast-cancer-htb-22/) and for HEK293 (https://altogen.com/product/hek-293-transfection-reagent-epithelial-kidney-cells/). In general, because HEK293 is so easy to transfect, you should be able to do so with most generics. However MCF-7 can be tougher, and there you may want to invest in a pre-optimized reagent to prevent excess in house optimization.

Lipofectamine 3000 is the best i highly recommend for HEK cells, over 60% efficiency u get.

I have used FuGene HD (Promega) and PEI for HEK 293T cells with good transfection efficiency.

Believe me, all transfection reagents on the market will give you good results for these common cell lines. It's up to you to give some efforts for optimization and reach really the best you can have with the chosen reagent. And in my opinion, Transfectin is a hidden Lipofectamine... If you experience some difficulties with lipid-based reagents, you can think about another alternative like our polymer-based Viromers. Just write me...

Anandita you can use Lipofectamine® LTX plus for better transfection efficiency( ~70-80%)..
