I found a paper from 2004:
Article Distributions of exons and introns in the human genome
...but there must be a way to get more recent data, a lot has been annotated since then! I check NCBI's genome page and, short of downloading the FASTA file of all exons, I can't see a simple way to get this data.
Hi Max, I think this may be a more difficult question than you think. For instance, do you only want exons from protein coding genes or also tRNAs, miRNAs, rRNAs, etc...? Do you want to include predicted genes or only genes with EST evidence. In genes with alternative splicing, do you want to count/include all the alternate exons separately? My point being, I don't think there is as definitive an answer as you might hope. If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for the number of exons?
