I have lived away from Canada for many years, but there used to be no fixed age of retirement for academics. It was difficult to fire those 'over the hill' because they could complain of age discrimination. Now all professors become emeritus (retired) at age 65. Off the subject, I was forced to retire from the UN at age 60. The UN retirement age is now 62 - still very low.
A better question might be 'Should there be a mandatory age of retirement?'
In Kerala (a sate in India) retitement age is 56. Any move to raise it invites stff resistance form the youth organisations. Since it is a very big vote bank, no political party dares to annoy them.
In the Philippines, academicians and scientists in Government owned and most private establishments/ universities can retire with benefits at 60, however some extend for five more years until the mandatory retiring age of 65 and get full retirement benefits. Some retired professors are then awarded emeritus positions.
In Brazil mandatory retirement is 70, but at 35 year of contribution for goverment pension plan (according new rule of 2003) a man could retire e woman at 30 years of contributions.
In Hungary there isn't separate retirement age for scientists. For them there have to apply the normal age, which is 62 now, but it will gradually rises to 65 until 2022.
In Indonesia there is an act (law) that retirement age for a full professor working in state university (as a civil servant) is 70 year. For lecturers who are not full professor, their retirement age is 65. For non-academic workers (administrative, laborans and other supporting workers in the university), their retirement age is 58 yr.
In Italy, university professors must now retire at 70. Researchers of government research institutions at 67, independently of their position, like the other workers.
In Israel it depends on the pension plan. For professors with state (budgeted) pension retirement is at of the end of the academic year in which they are 68 years. For those who save for pension from their salaries, it is two more years (end of academic year in which they are 70 years).
In Russia since 2018 the age for retirement is 65 for man and 60 for women regardless whether you are academics or not. The is no mandatory retirement for professors or researchers, they could work and receive retirement money simultaneously. The mandatory retirement exist only for governmental officials, diplomats and military officers
Retirement age for Public University Teachers in Bangladesh is 65 years by the following Act.
'Public University Teachers (Retirement) (Special Act) Bill-2012' into law by fixing a general retirement age-limit of 65 years for teachers of all public universities.
