A question I was looking at the ranking of countries in order of research work published Is there a reliable source to use ? I used this site SJR and it classified them according to five factors , and the rank differs with each factor . They used 1- Number of documents 2- Number of citable documents 3- Citations 4- Self-citations 5- citations per document 6- h-index Which one of these is the most accurate factor to use ? number of citable documents ?
Something else , they didn't account for population size . For example , China and India have huge populations , and other countries have a small population , so its logic that the number of people working in research is much higher in China or India , thus a much bigger amount of people publishing ! SO , How can we remove this risk of error or bias (if we can call it bias ) ??

I think, Scimago has considered all these six factors to make the ranking. Population of a country was not considered. See, in every field only country is considered not population (e.g. a country-rank in education, sports & game etc.).

With the factors indicated by Dr. Asit, We can consider, also, other factors like originality of the work, the practical uses and novelty.

If you are after the average research influence you should select "Citations per Document". I am happy to see that with this parameter the Nordic countries together with Switzerland and Netherlands end in the top despite their size. This fits well with my experience.

So we always assess per country , not population . We can't remove the population effect , i.e countries with huge populations have higher publication numbers . ?
