At least a Master's, but most positions ask for PhD. They need publications in order for new recruits to be able to get tenure (become permanent). In order to get tenure, one has to have satisfactory performance in teaching as well (although sometimes this can be ignored if it is poor).

Minimum eligibility is Masters and PhD is desirable. Experience is not counted anyway.

In addition to passion, my feeling is, mere education will not guarantee application orientation to the content learning, therefore industrial experience in relevant field will surely add value.

In Brazil, they are starting to ask for a internship (300h) for all new teachers.

In Malaysia case, even you are having a master degree , you are no accepted to lecture in University , especially for those whom having professional qualification like UK Institute of engineer , British Computer Society charter professional or UK ACCA charter accountant membership .

It varies from university to university. Even some university appoint Bachelor degree holders as a Lecturer in Bangladesh. But to get promotion they need to achieve Master and then PhD degree gradually. In Ukraine, each university has different requirements. In our university - must necessarily be a candidate of science in the specialty that you teach. It is necessary to continue to engage in science and publish articles.

In our university, beside having a PhD from a reputed university, each applicant must have a rich CV too, i.e., few JCR publications, to have any chance of entering.

Most of teachers in universities are assistant and associate professor and of course full professor. Work in a university you must have completed a doctorate, 3 years of pedagogical studies, publications and also must have partisipated in re-training courses during every three years. To give lecture to students at least must be associate professor.

In Pakistan there are two regulatory bodies for appointment of university faculty 1. PMDC Pakistan medical and dental council

Current Trends in Higher Education in my country with regard to the requirements of industry, one has to possess a master degree or higher in Teacher education. The graduate output has not been compatible by industry (both national and international) standards that forces the employer to raise the standard bar for teaching.

The level of the “assistant” does not require a Ph.D. but a “Magister” or, in recent times, a “Master” degree.

In Ghana, the required qualification is a PhD degree in the field one desires to lecture. Also, the person must also demonstrate competitiveness in his/her field through research and publication. S/he must be seen as present to add his/her voice in public debates in the field especially during academic conferences, seminars and workshops.

Formerly, Masters degree holders were employed to lecture but the holders have been given some time span to pursue their PhD's otherwise they would be sacked.

Asking whether these qualifications are necessary? I would say Yes. This is because a person teaching at the highest level of education must be an exponent and an authority in his/her field of expertise. Yet, I feel that ONLY qualifications are not enough for employing people to be lecturers. Good teaching skills, supervisory skills, research skills, interpersonal relation skills and good moral behavior must also be demonstrated by university teachers.

These requirements would cushion the university teacher to be more productive and assist learners at this high ladder of education to acquire the required skills and knowledge they would need to function better in their societies as key occupants of high level positions in industries and organizations in the society.

In Canada we need PhD and P.Eng (for an Engineering course ) or LEL (that is limited) because it is the undergrad degree is what they care about .

Papers , yes we need (it is a global trend) . In Canada , a paper will have @ least 10 names !!!!! Wonder what their roles are ...

In Nigeria, Ph.D is the ultimate. Any other degree place a big limitation on you as a University lecturer. For example, you can not be a senior lecturer without a Ph.D .

In Canada, A PhD is required to be hired in a university & it is expected that a university professor will publish frequently - certainly you can't expect to get tenure without a significant publishing record. Requirements in the colleges are less with practical qualifications required.

In Brazil, it is necessary to have master degree in order to lecture in a university. But it is possible to teach in private and public universities being undergraduated only. The law allows universities to work with 1/3 of its teachers with master or phd. Substitute teachers can be hired with bachelor degree.

Even if the law allows 2/3 of the teachers with bachelor degrees, universities prefer to hire masters and doctors.

The minimum curriculum to be university professor, in both public and private universities, are Bachelor's + Master's or Specialty, the profession or discipline where you want to be a teacher.

Besides living different experiences, even though we are under the laws, our country has some curious characteristics. The law which normatizes the hiring of university teachers is very "weak" and the grounds to real problems, but the reality, in all the country, is a lot better. Most institutions try to contract only master degree holders on. Usually, when officials allow the schools to hire a less qualified profesionals, the tendency is to hire less qualified professionals as they would cost less for the institution, but fortunately, this is not happening in most cases in our country.

Yet today a lot of PhD. holders are unsuccessful at finding teaching opportunities at universities ( the number of PhD holders candidate for teaching is increasing dramatically). • I am from Canada. Requirements may vary slightly across the country as education is a provincial responsibility, but these are the common ones I believe. Requirements have changed over time. Previously a Master degree was needed in your subject area but now a PhD is the asked for requirement. There are many incentives to get this qualification if you do not already have it, such as time off to study, financial incentives, etc. In the professional disciplines like mine (nursing), previous experience in this area is definitely needed. Yes to publish is strongly pushed, but rewards such as monetary rewards for researching and publishing are also given at some universities. However, when one has tenure, generally speaking there are not punishments per se for not publishing, but you may not get the little perks available to your other colleagues. Faculty are not tested on their knowledge of anything i.e., subject matter, educational methods, etc. But we do have yearly anonymous teaching evaluations from our students. As far as I know, no one gets punished for bad evaluations, but there are wards given to excellent teachers as well.

Echoing Hassan Banaruee, we really need to think, more than diploma required, in skills that really need a professor.

There are several colleagues who fail to manage the classroom space, without the slightest competence in how to carry out learning evaluation or even knowledge of how to take this process. So, to think in an evaluation of the educational space, still less, is part of the competences list dominated by many university professors, be they masters or doctors. Mastering knowledge does not guarantee teaching and learning, nor does it guarantee the applicability of what is studied, neither in its practical areas and often not even in research.

Probably I will extend your question a little bit, in Egypt, the total hours per week for Home Economics teacher in schools from year 1 to year 4 is 227 hours. From year 2 starting the specialization, subjects are divided into 10 educational subjects and 37 specialised subjects include nutrition and food science and clothing and textiles subjects. For demonstrators in my department is a mixture of training and supervision from seniors. For lectures about 30 specilaised subjects plus thesis, weirdly not contain any education subjects! To be a lecturer is to have a PhD, not required experience conditioned to be appointed as demonstrator first.
