As social media can be considered as a partial factor of exponential knowledge automation, I would say speed. Whereas, 30 years before, you needed a lot of time (several months) to check about others doing the same or related research, you can do this today in some hours. In the 1980s, I had even to pay relevant sums for this special services and to wait for about 2 weeks, with a lot of feedback phoning in between. My response is: lower cost and speed.

One good thing about social media is the easy to access to data gathering and materials. But in wider perspective, if a platform like Research gate is considered as a social media, which is it, then the free access to materials will lead to the rise of open access journal [with negative impact on the purse of the researchers, as they will pay for publications] and kill the closed access journals [which have negative impact on the users as they pay to access papers but beneficial to researchers as they don't pay to publish]. I think Research gate will soon become facebook of researchers and become the largest academic network in the world, connecting researchers from a variety of disciplines.

Social media is certainly an useful platform for knowledge and experience sharing, but too much dependence on social media may lead to disastrous consequences.

Not so much for young researchers (like how Artur said) , for seasoned Prof(s) then a platform to broaden the research by collaboration and citations .

I would rather prefer having home based interaction for research may be for product then outside (my opinion only )
