I conduct research in the field of molecular oncology and, in addition to the main research article, I have accumulated some data for a summary, literally 4-5 pages (the grant is ending soon, so there is no possibility to conduct a full-scale study). Which, in this case, is it better to choose the type of articles - communication or brief report? Any significant differences?

There are additional rules for some journals specifically. For example, some journals might say that the limit for "short communications" articles is 1500 words. That would be about 3 pages!
They might also have rules like that you cannot use headings like "Introduction", "Method", "Results" and "Discussion" which you might for longer papers.
