Any porphyrin is a dye but not any dye is a porphyrin.
Indeed, "porphyrin" is a class of tetrapyrrole compounds, whilst "porphyrin dye" is just a category of dyes.
Porphyrins are macrocyclic compounds formed by four pyrrole rings linked by methine bridges.
Porphyrins can be functionalized in positions meta or beta obtaining variety of compounds based on this. Because it has delocalized electrons has optical properties, so it is used as sensitizing dyes.
