I did extraction of total RNA on plasma samples (I am interested in circulating microRNA).
How can I do to know if my sample are of good quality and if there are no partially-degraded RNA.
Because they are plasma samples, we can not use the RIN score which look for RNAr.

- I too have extracted miRNA from blood and as you correctly point out 260/280 and 260/230 ratios are mis leading
- When I did this therefore I simply performed qPCR on all such samples and went back to fresh starting material for those that didnt work
- Thus, if at all possible - and I know this isnt always possible for small plasma samples where RNA is required - try and perform qRT PCR on multiple plasma aliquots
- What is more, when I screened patient samples in this way we used a pre amplification of the RNA by adding a poly A tail before making cDNA and thence qPCR
- This made analysis much more reliable regardless of the starting quality and/or quantity of patient derived materials
