Hi Hom - I believe that it is a 'semantic' difference that will vary between institutions and geography. I have worked in institutions that will use both terms and often use the two terms interchangeably. Of all the institutions that I have worked at there is sometimes a differential between thesis and dissertation; usually where dissertation is at the Honours/Masters level - and the thesis is often PhD level. However, this is not exclusive and depends on may factors  - such as discipline. I don't personally prefer either - as long as their is consistency in the use of the terms.

I used Thesis for my MA in Tribhuvan University, Nepal and Dissertation for my PhD, Tokyo University, Japan.

Hi Hom - like I suggested - it varies between geographies etc. I don't think that there is an exact rule.

Theses are usually required for a master's degree and dissertations are usually required for a doctoral degree; while in other contexts and geographies, the reverse is true.

I agree with Dean Whitehead. In some countries, dissertation is commonly used for masters research while thesis is used for doctoral research. In some other countries, the reverse is commonly the case. Yet even in the same country, some institutions use dissertation for masters research and thesis for doctoral research while others use the terms the other way round. There is no universally accepted application of the terms

I think the difference between thesis and dissertation depends on the country you study in. For example, in the country I study in (Malaysia) there is no difference between thesis and dissertation, both have same meaning. But in USA, you can see different meaning such as:

1) Thesis is performed to earn a Master’s degree, while dissertation is submitted at the end of a PhD. 

2) For a dissertation, you have to conduct original research, while for a thesis you have to synthesize already existing literature.

3) Dissertation analysis is added to the already existing literature, while thesis is an analysis of the existing literature.

Whereas, the definition of thesis and dissertation is almost the opposite of the above-mentioned steps in the other Europe countries.

The difference betwen thesis and dissertation depends mainly on institutions, disciplines, and countries. But it is also the case that dissertation and thesis are used in an interchangeable way. If I am not wrong,  in the USA, for example, dissertation is more applied when one earns a Master Degree, and thesis when one earns a Ph D degree. In Medicine, you do not get a Ph D, but a title of Medical Doctor.

As I see it, this distinction between thesis and dissertation makes sense, Why? You can perform a Master dissertation without advancing a new thesis, hypothesis, and the like. What you have to do in a Master dissertation is to elaborate  or dissertate on an issue without necessarily performing original research. In other words, in a Master dissertation you do not need to advance and test a new thesis, hypothesis, or theory. In contradistiction, in a Ph D thesis you have, say, a thesis to defend and, hence, to go beyond the information given, .that is, to perform an original research.

In my country, Portugal, the terms thesis and dissertation are used in an interchangeable way. For me, what is important is to have good or even excellent Master and Ph D theses or dissertations,

Both can be used either for MS or PhD.

A good question, Hom. The differences in adopting these terms among countries -- and even among academic institutions and programs (e.g., coursework, mixed-mode) within the same country -- can be pretty confusing. I wonder, why the terminology has not been (cannot be-?) unified?

Thank you so much for your active participation. This question was very simple but some times it used to get confusion about the difference between Thesis and Dissertation. Now, I am clear that thesis and dissertation can be used interchangeably, only the difference is how the different faculty and institution practice it.

In my part of the United States, a Thesis is for a Master's degree and a Dissertation is for a doctorate.

Yes, I agree with Michael... I wrote a These for my Masters & a Dissertation for my Ph.D..... I think that is generally true here in the United States... but I have heard others confuse these two terms... not sure if it is their confusion or if indeed in some institutions they consider a "Thesis" part of the program for a doctoral degree - may also be due to the caliber of the educational institution... Just a thought...

I think, dissertation is for Master and Thesis for PhD.

I think Thesis is for PhD, and dissertation for master

The thesis may be written at the end of project required for a Master degree while dissertation is during the doctoral degree program. Some consider it similar is both is are the requirement but may be some institute use at and also provide their own format for its writing.
