I think it is much more likely that either a there were more than one cell type to start out with or be you got contamination from one of the other cell lines that you're working with I think it's less likely for you to start out with a homogeneous outline and then it up with a heterogeneous outline given that was a pure culture
I agree with blake. it is far too common to have one cell line contaminating another one, especially when they share the same medium. some time ago, a study on several cell lines showed that they were, actually, all hela cells!
