In an Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, an action research was carried out to connect farmers with agricultural experts through an innovative audio visual Smartphone. It helped farmers to know information on new technology, funding sources as well as to identify and treat diseases and pests. It helps improving extension services delivery and two-way communication between farmers and agricultural experts. It is not known from this innovation, how much was the contribution on productivity and efficiency in agriculture. I am interested to know any other similar innovation which may helping farmers improving productivity and efficiency.
One thing I can suggest is to introduce a sort of repository of good practices. Explained in few words this supporting element brings back to farmers' attention "old" and "good" techniques which are no longer regraded as innovation. Although not new unless for the farmers ready to try it for their first time these techniques or practices can have a considerable added value, particularly and importantly by the small or reasonable amounts of required means or resources. This feature makes them particularly valuable when resource scarcity is an issue. To use this “collection” of good practices, a simple repository with enhanced indexing and search feature should be sufficient. It does not require permanent two-way communication, except for answering the questions and mobilising the expertise from farmers who already tried the respective practices (as an option to an effective implementation). Can also suggest a technical solution, free for the communities and that is the OpenDocMan Document Management System that I tried and works perfectly on all sorts of mobile devices and platforms (as operating system).
