Conceptually speaking, you could look at; 1) their products and; 2) the impact of their products on; a) economic activity; b) nature/environment; c) society - values, social well being etc., and; 4) technological stock, both tangible and intangible.
You could I guess also look at the university value chain or activity chain's impact on those four (4) hypothetical dependent variables.

I come from a country (Venezuela) where Universities have an important role in Society. Most of the faculties do practice in company, hospital, etc. In ours carers we have as curricula practice in the last 4 semesters.

I think they are doing very little as this is out of academia for the general universities. May be some different in India and Middle-Eastern countries.
I think this is an important matter but which will depend greatly on the laws, legislations and social background of the region where the university is based. In addition, if the general management of the university is not dynamic enough or much theoritically centered, the impact will be very little and very slow...
Sometimes the university's contribution to the region is seen to be relevant depending on how aggressive the management is including their public relations. Do they see themselves as key contributors to societal needs or they are there just to fulfill the obligation of having a university in the region? The objectives of establishing the university in the region matters. This is a mixed concoction of reasons......

The contributions of universities in the region in which we are are very weak. They are very far from the problems of the societies to which they belong. As for the teaching staff, the majority work for wages and not for the purpose of developing university outcomes or finding real solutions to the great problems that society suffers from.
