These days, practically there are no accepted means to control or prevent harsh or destructive behaviour of students at university. The only opportunity may be to ask politely him/her to respect the right of others for undisturbed study. About 20 years ago I asked noisy or impertinent students to leave the room. Generally, this worked well.  The best way would be to select talented, diligent and polite students to university, briefly to select and admit students with culture.  

You can develop a classroom etiquette video and run it at the beginning of the class, so students know what behaviour is expected and the penalties applied when one misbehaves in class. It's easier said than done. But it puts the onus on the student to live up to these expectations.

The best thing to do is to engage in dialogue with the student, reminding him/her of the consequences of his/her actions while opening up remedial assistance if the student is determined to change that bad attitude. When all talks fail, the teacher must act by following the laid down punishment as spelt out in the etiquette governing the teaching and learning environment to ensure discipline in the class. I suggest to look on classroom and teacher form other point - not "to give their knowledge to the students in a proper way", but to provide learning - to involve students in the learning process. The student must deal with cognition and thinking. The student must find new knowledge, not receive from teacher.

I would remind the (occasional) student that other students had also paid good money to be at University and that s/he should respect their wishes to be in the classroom. 

Controlling students' misbehaviour depends, to a large extent, on the level in school as well as the age and maturity levels of learners. At the university level, establishment of clear rules and regulations for classroom conduct does work to a large extent. Also communicating a sense of responsibility both on the part of the teacher and learners does work too. Creating a classroom environment of mutual respect does help too

It is class management matter. Students' behavior depends to a large extent on the teacher's behavior.  If the teacher put a clear structures of what he want and what he dislikes, it will be clear in front of students what is wrong and what is right. The teacher can contains students bad behavior in patience, guiding and advising.

Dear Dr Raid,

I have 30 years experience in teaching in  civil and army universities. The experience transferred from no experience in the beginning of teaching that includes to be nervous and ask the bad behavior student to go out the classroom. When get the experience  never let any situations get me out of control, deal with student calmly as a father politely and ask the student that time is specifically for the lecture and I have to finish my work if you happy to say OK if not you can meet me in my office. The time of lecture is  exactly like a time of praying this is my rule.

Controlling a class of more students is really challenging. You need to be tricky to control that. Never continue the class by giving bulk information. Try to relate the topic with real life experience or stories. Make some fun with those students whom are not serious or making problems. Make them as like your friend.  

I would like also to add something to your question that the bad behavior took place in the the classroom that you may teach 6-14 weeks. What about if the student stay with you 4 years as a supervisor and make continue communication with him/her.

A rule of no distraction and no disruptions should be agreed with the class from the beginning of the class with penalties suggested by the class. Sanctions should be applied fairly to deter others from doing same. My thought.

First of all, I would talk with the student, privately, in order to understand his attitude. Do not ignore negative attitudes. The problem has to be immediately resolved.Then, he would be aware of the consequences of such a behavior. If he continues disturbing the class, he will receive a reprimand, but never in front of his mates (They will always know what happened). However, never loose control or speak loud. This kind of attitude always turns things worse.

The key is to develop empathy in the classroom. Empathy and cooperation are together  the heart of a respectful and "friendly" classroom.

I would stop the class and talk about it with everyone, pointing out the importance of the rules and reminding them about being respetful with everyone.

I suppose they already know the rules and their consequences, which were established the first days of class, so you would have to follow the consequence for the bad behavior.

I have taught in a private self financing engineering college for 2 years where many students come for enjoying colg life and attend classes just to ensure minimum attendance. Ofcourse controlling class was difficult as boy students especially used to sit in their own world. There are instances that when we point a student and ask what is the talking going on, they will tell back in a shouting way that why the teacher was pointing only them as he or she was not the only student making noise. Some students talk to teachers in angry mode when they are made to stand up as problem makers. I have seen lady teachers crying and moving out of lecture halls unable to withstand the situation. There are some other set of bold teachers who react violently in class to the problem making students. Of course there are teachers who complaint to higher authorities as well as to the parents of the concerned student. I have seen and heard many such issues before I started taking classes.So I used to be strict in class. Whenever I hear noises made i will give a look to the area from where noises come. When some students reacted badly to me i never used to over react or show my grudge as it will spoil the ambience and teaching atmosphere of class. I Used to sent students out of my class when found creating nuisance and if some students protested, I used to tell you are not obeying me so never again come to me for any favour I won't even consider you at that time. With that I will stop the issue and continue classes. I have seen all these students after some time come and apologise to me for the mistakes made by them. I feel teachers should realise the mental state of students when they are made guilty in front of class. Some students have a feeling under such situation and they react strangely. As teachers we should maintain our composure and ensure that the ambience and teaching atmosphere in the class is not spoiled due to word exchanges between teacher and students. I used to tell the students that if anyone shows courage to disturb the class, they should also show the same courage when asked to leave the class.i am sharing some of my experiences as well as whatever I heard and seen during my 2 years teaching career

Students are distracted when, 1. they are dis-interested in the content, 2. there is a dis-tractor (noise) this could be form some other activity they enjoy more, or from some recent pleasurable experience (party, sex, intimate relationship, etc) and 3. they are not involved in the learning process.  Getting students involved in the learning process is paramount to having an engaged class. Students can be involved collaboratively or cooperatively, through projects or the flipped classroom where they act as teachers of small groups within the class or the whole class. Care should also be taken to interact with the students who is deviant to inquire about his/her experiences and involvement in their social life. Share your moment of youth when you were distracted and the cause. Share your experience and knowledge of the benefit(s) of relationships. This can be done over the course of the academic year, a bit at a time. Students want to know that you are human too and that you made mistakes in your growing up experience. Most importantly, set ground rules early and do not bluff, say and promise only what you will do when individuals get "out of line" - within the perimeter of the educational guidelines.Last, but by no means least. be a friend to everyone in the class, let each boy and girl know that you care, not just about how well they do, but about their overall success in curricular activities, extracurricular activities, and the hidden curriculum.

I am teaching in a all girls college and have not faced extreme cases in the class. In case of someone talking or not being attentive either my next question goes to her or I repeatedly look towards her and she gets the message. Not only she but many get the message. I don't like scolding the class and spoiling my peace to discipline them. (Not faced unruly students but in case I face such students then I would be firm, ask reason  and tell them to behave).

I have performed examination duty at a college where students do create problems, there I am strict.

Generally in my classes I try to keep my students motivated with data of the daily life and its relation with the biological subjects (that is the subject). the predisposition is adequate and if I see that they are distracted with the electronic devices I request that they stop using them in my class.

It depends on the behavior. sometimes talking to the student in private would be enough. in other cases, you might need to talk to the student's parents or the psychologist in your department if the behavior hurts other or if the student has aggressive attitude.

My method is:

At each session, I observe unacceptable situations but they are dangerous on the course of the lesson. I make the observation by sending implicit messages on the incceptability of such a thing and that there will be sanctions if this behavior continues or repeats itself.

In the extreme case, I ask the offending student to leave the room and say, "You're leaving the room or I'm going to leave." In this case, he leaves to avoid additional functions.

In general, respect for the teacher must be imposed by implicit messages.

Bad behavior of students in the classroom is certainly not the misbehavior of the student for a day or two .In this case it is very likely that teachers may have noticed the misbehavior of student for quite some times & in such cases it is the responsibility of teacher to find out the reason of the misbehavior of students & if the teacher is not satisfied than teacher should necessary disciplinary action for the students .

With this act of action , the misbehavior of student can be noticed & observed by the parents & in such cases parent may take remedial measure .Alternatively the teacher should call the parents in the classroom & in the office & with the discussion for the misbehavior with the parents, both should find the suitable solution which may help the student to change the behavior .

Since the students I teach are adults over 18, it is expected that they behave as adults. To prevent issues, I keep the class engaged and use group work to prevent boredom or acting out. if a student is really disruptive I give them three strikes like in baseball

I ignore the situation unless it visibly disturbs other students in the classroom. Then I politely say something to the student, such as, "Could you please stop doing that?" If that doesn't work, I then tell the student more firmly that s/he needs to stop doing what s/he is doing or leave. I've never had to kick a student out of class before and hope I never do!

Dear Dr Raid, it is a good question, if teacher is good with teaching abilities this kind of problem may not arise. If this problem arise, next day onwards I will ask one or two questions in between the lecture.

Most of the times it depend on the quality of the teacher. If teacher is very good in teaching, guiding, counselling and inspiring students then automatically students will exhibit good bechavior and respect teacher. This is my own experience.

Class room maintenance entirely/solely depends on a teacher how she/he teaches. If you motivate/teach in such a way it is pin-drop silence, time runs away and all feel is the class finished so soon!!! No question of bad behavior of students at all. Communicating up to the levels of all students is more important. Everybody should understand then no question of misbehavior. By chance if some one misbehaves ask peacefully what the problem is , modulate/modify that point also to the topic of lesson.

Before the misbehavior of a student in class, before sanctioning him and making a report, I talk to him to find out what his discomfort is in the classroom, in order to identify the source of his bad behavior.

Once identified the source of the discomfort, I take letters in the matter according to each case; whether he talks to the family, to the managers and administrators of the school, to his friends; or ask for psychological or medical support so that any illness is treated.

Finally, the problem is psycho-pedagogical, my teaching performance to the needs and learning style of these students. I also try to avoid or improve my performance as a counselor and motivator of my students' learning.

You can counsel them, through your friendly disposition. Don't condemn their actions outright, show them the better way to behave in such manner.

In addition, I try to investigate why the student misbehaves. Maybe there is a disability or illness or perhaps a tragedy in his or her life. I try to find out if there is something going on in his or her life that is causing the behavior and inhibiting learning. The underlying issue is really internal vs. external motivation. Internal is far more powerful. So, in American schools ( I say this in recognition that these issues can be culture-bound, so I don't presume that this all works the same in cultures I have not observed), teachers must first control their own emotional reaction to the behavior. Adopting a neutral tone in addressing it avoids the child's association with parental fussing. Criticism is rarely heeded; disapproval and disappointment does not help in the long run. In my role as principal of a large, urban, high-poverty, teacher-led public high school, we had adopted "core values," (courage, respect, empathy, desire, integrity, and teamwork). We then trained ourselves as a staff to ask a student who behaved badly: "What core values do you think you might have violated by doing this?" --and then let the child think, help him/her to recall the 6 values and reflect--sometimes it was more than one. Having the child (adolescents, in our case) remember, choose, and articulate the nature of their violation in relation to the whole school as a body and its decision to adopt those values, turned out to be a very powerful device for us. When we first began doing this, student often could not even remember the 6 values and had to be prompted. But over a period of time, we saw students begin to be able to USE those values to assess THEIR OWN behavior, and change it. This accelerated the maturing process for many teens. I believe this technique can be used successfully in many schools if consistently practiced by the entire faculty and administration. It can also be taught to parents, bringing about a greater alignment between home and school. It can fold well into a school or district's effort to overhaul its traditional, punitive, rejection-based discipline process, enabling the district to replace it with an acceptance-based process that is actually developmental, and appropriate for the learning environment. It can also help the faculty acquire skills needed for a more "restorative justice" approach to managing student behavior, which might include student courts, or other social-emotional-based strategies

This problem maybe face teachers so we should act cautiously when exposed to such a situation and try to find out the cause and treat it at the same time

I will give them stern warning and make them realize what they are going to loose if they dont listen properly in the class room.

I try to conduct lecture and practice to make students interested. If student behaves badly and obstacle in my classroom, I pay attention to him and ..... he is OK.

I guess that it is very important the cultural and educational level of your students. Year by year your audience is changing and it is very important to understand who are your students. In my practice there were some few cases when the situation was close to get out of hand but fortunately I find the right phrase to establish the control. The sense of humour and calmness are very helpful. Of course the sense of humour should be used carefully.

First:I try to explain the reason for this thing and try to solve the problem with student , but if the reason unacceptable i give him a last chance otherwise i wouldn't allow him to present in my lecture in future.

Try as much as possible to make the student understand the concomitant effect of the bad behavior and that it might culminate in regrets if not curtailed.

Try to understand the hidden reason behind the behaviour of the student. Then council him/her which highlighting the importance of virtues and respect the human dignity what ever we do.
