The role of Carbohydrates in the biomembrane is to provide protection to the cell from the outside environment. In humans it allows cells on the inside of the blood vessels to withstand a strong flow of liquid across their surfaces. It can help the host cells to differentiate between the friendly cells and intruding enemy cells during the immune response. Wheras the Ion Channels in the membrane are usually trans membrane proteins, the direct of action of membrane carbohydrates on the ion activity is not well studied. There could be potential action of Carbohydrates in maintaining ion flux in the cell and also enable the cell to withstand these reactions as it plays the role in maintaining the charge of the cell
