At the 4.5 th year of my PhD, I feel surprised to see there is no work duration or total working hours defined or penned as rule (per day or total in a week) for a research scholar in India (for none of the govt. funding agencies or universities or research labs). Who defines the working duration for a PhD scholar? Is it by him/herself or by the institute or by the guide? Even If I accept that research is for betterment for my own life and I am funded by Govt agency then I would expect a defined protocol from Govt side which will make my working duration/day well defined, which cannot be anything or anytime as somebody finds according to his own criteria. At worst case there should be some minimum (leave the maximum as infinity) up to what a student must be present in the lab. In any field other than research the rule already exists either in form of time scale or in form of money (when the work hours are 24 x 7 for private companies). Is there any documentation anywhere in India or any where even outside India which talks about the working duration of a PHD in a lab? If not then why not?
