If the animals are to be either mice, mouse or rats, and the bacteria is to be Streptococcus pneumoniae. Are there any recommended books/paper on the health & safety guidelines on the infection part of the animal model? Does it have to be an individual room for the project? Do I need a negative pressure room?
I used to prepare pseudomonas aeruginosa and injected it to mice intratracheakly and This is what I can tell you.
First and foremost start with PPE (lab coat, gloves and googles). and change gloves frequently. Also it is very important to follow aseptic procedures: clean disinfected area, prepare the animal (disinfect the area of injection; shaving animal, rubbing alcohol and/or Betadine)
I used designated hood that I use for all my experiments while preparing your bacteria and serial dilutions (in addition to incubator that is used to grow bacteria)
have a device that help you to sterilize material between animal, while switching from animal to the next one (such as hot bead sterilizer)
and also 10% bleach solution to clean up all the surfaces and materials afterward. and dispose the of contaminated waste appropriately.
All this has been said it is advised to check with you insitution occupational safety and heath (=OSHA as we call it here in US). to be conformed with the regulation. I hope this was helpful. Aicha
