What are the differences between ST theory and STZ theory in metallic glasses?

In the process of studying the basic flow units of amorphous alloys, there are two theoretical models that give me a headache.

1. shear Transformation (ST) model proposed by Argon A S

2. shear transformation zone (STZ) model proposed by Flak M L and Langer J S

Their concepts always confuse me. What are the differences and connections between the two models? I beg for a detailed explanation.
