In the past I've used TEM to count myelinated and unmyelinated fibres in peripheral nerves (e.g. sciatic nerve), but in my current institution this is looking like it would be very expensive and hence I am wondering if this might be possible using confocal microscopy.

From a brief look online there seem to be protocols for visualising myelinated fibres using light microscopy, but the resolution does not seem sufficient for unmyelinated fibre visualisation.

Does any have any tips/experience of peripheral nerve staining for visualisation of unmyelinated fibres?
