Our lab has recently started culturing cells from elective abdominal surgery adipose tissue biopsies. We have had some difficulty regarding contaminated cultures and we suspect that there may be resistant enterococci from the donor involved.
Does anyone have any experience in replacing the Penicillin in the regular Pen/Strep/Ampho with Vancomycin to minimise contamination?
Hi Robert, i would like to know why you replaced pen/strep/ampho with vancomycin to eliminate contaminants in cell culture. From my experience most enterobacteriaceae and even staphylococcus pose resistance to vancomycin
CELL culture must be obtained with carrefull enough to garatize not external contamination in that case pen/strep/ampho prevent and eliminate contaminats, otherwisemost enterobacteriaceae and even enterococcus had resistance to vancomycin

Our logic for possibly employing Vancomycin in our culture experiements is that our original tissue biopsies are originating from the abdominal cavities from patients undergoing a surgery requiring an incision. Many of these patients may have been exposed to Penicillin based antibiotics prior to surgery.
I was curious to see if anyone else working in cell culture had any good/bad experiences with using vancomycin with particularly valuable cell cultures?
