I recently came across Cell Press Sneak Peek. Is it a good idea to use this option while the paper is in the first round of peer review? What if the paper is rejected after the review. Will you be still able to submit it in other journals?
This preprint service is similar to Arxiv, except that it is run by Elsevier, so the expectation now is that you will publish in one of their Journals.
Preprinting is a double edged sword. You may get an eagle-eyed reader who spots that glaring error that you can quickly fix. It does enable you to stake your claim. However, it also allows the big name laboratories to throw a lot of money and resources at your emerging research, and swamp the field. Also, preprints prevent you from patenting your inventions along the way.
If your paper is rejected by a big-name journal, you can always panelbeat it and submit it to a small-name journal. This is true whether you have publicised a preprint or not.
