I need to assess the soil fungal community. Any ideas? Rose Bengal plates is a possibility as is glomalin production. Anything else? I haven't done any work on fungi yet.
Abhijeet Singh my work entails the effect of agricultural management practices on soil microbial communities. Up to now I have tested aggregate stability, active carbon, substrate utilisation, microbial activity, but would like to add something on fungi since we know they sequester carbon. I can probably start with AM, but would like to look at other fungi as well.
Thats a nice work you are doing. However, in follow up your actual question, do you want to look at diversity of different fungi?
As I understand, carbon sequestration is a functional process which can not be seen by the diversity analysis. But, with the use of diversity result and correlating it with the research literature (if there are, may be), you can interpret the possible pathways. Otherwise you have to do some advanced studies to identify and track the carbon sequester mechanism. Also, such studies would be difficult on community level. If you have any particular species, it can be comparatively easier.
