I think the comments are showing only one side of the coin.

In the review article, many journals do not entertain the writer if s/ he has not having a good number (say 10) of previous publications on the topic.

They calculate it from the subject and number of self citation at the reference section of the review article.

The self-citation should be only when it is necessary, beyond that, it would seem that it is only a way to generate data, but not to contribute to knowledge.

I think a limit of three for a manuscript should be ideal. One or two self citation in a given subject could be likened that the author is well knowledgeable about the subject. Personally, I normally lose interest in a work when there is more than 3 intentional self citation.

No, I am disagree with you my respected colleague, because ideas generation is exactly similar to polynomial generation in mathematics, so that means it is possible to complete the mother researxh idea by a new generations for the same researcher.

Totally agree with you Dr. Yogesh J. Bagul . If an algorithm is in place to help calculate the limits, I think authors can simply concentrate on writing something meaningful instead of connecting their previous work when it has no business with the current.

Self-citations should not be limited by the number but by relevance to the main body of the paper. A good referee of the paper would recommend omitting irrelevant self-citations.

I do agree with you but if someone is not confident enough to cite themselves, how about other people?

Self-citation from relevant publications should be determined by the absolute need to do so, but as much as possible where necessary avoided.

Generally, to assure an accurate practice, self-citations should be used to support the arguments, not to demonstrate your research. Moreover, self-cites may used to compare recent findings of the research with previous results when studying the same theme. The important point here is to avoid turning self-citations into self-promotion.
