In normal practice different researchers collaborate with others of there own field. Mostly this practice is unofficial and mainly depends ones personal relations and comfort with certain person. I think organization at its own level should take step and communicate and welcomes other groups at organization level (official). Plus there should be meetings other then conferences between leads and juniors of different groups to share the latest ideas.
