In homemade colloidal gel stains based on Coomassie Blue G250, 4..12% phosphoric acid are added as last step to promote colloid formation. How does it work: Is it "just" pH or do phosphate (dihydrogen phosphate?) ions play a special role? Could it be replaced by another acid, like sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, TCA or similar?
