Proinflammatory cytokines (PIC) play a fundamental role in the inflammation. In our experience several changes observed in the blood around calving suggest a release of PIC (e.g. raise of positive acute phase proteins and reduction of negative acute phase proteins). Recently, we started to measure some of these PIC and more experiments are in progress (to see some of recent publication of my group). In general we observed different levels of PIC before calving and a smal raise at calving day. At the beginning of lactation the changes are not very clear, but in one experiment (Trevisi et al.,2012, Research in Veterinary Science 93:695–704), we found the highest levels of IL-6 in cows that suffered the more severe inflammation in the peripartum.
Thank you for answers, but what I am wondering about, are there any cytokines which are specific to particular species eg. Bovine ENA (boENA) is present in bovines and has its role in genesis of pulmonary inflammation.
Varun - so far, there are only few cytokines/chemokines described that are only present in one mammalian species, and not others. Given the sequence similarity. BoENA is highly likely the counterpart of humanENA78, which is now called CXCL5. If you are interested in this, check out these two article: Anim Genet. 2011 Aug;42(4):341-53; BMC Genomics. 2010 Jul 19;11:439. If you compare avian and mammalian system, there are differences. Best starting point here is to scan PubMed for articles by Pete Kaiser. Hope that helps?
