Rejection of paper without any reason given

Sometimes, the journal rejects the work without citing any reasons, what could be the reason here? It really is discouraging at times. Please advise what could be missing in the article when no reason is cited and simple rejection is made and what could be done? Can we write them back for providing any reasons or ask them to reconsider our work?

Sometimes nothing is wrong with the paper. In addition to quality of submissions, journals may also seek to provide coverage of a range of different areas for their issues. And if they are short-staffed and get too many submissions, they may not bother with personalized replies.
