So there is now cure for cancer and whether or not Big Pharma is worried, my invention will soon formally enter development. Now for your question, Biologically , self replicating DNA as a result of fast growing DNA chains with triggering factors like excess radiation, or lots of sugar intake where DNA aggressively releases excess ATP due to hyperexcitable electron flow movement as a result of those triggering factors, following which DNA chain initially grows and becomes 4 helix DNA (normally it is double helix), causes abnormal cell growth due to self replication of cells arising from this abnormal twin DNA structure. In fact, if DNA of any cancer cell itself was observed, under all lie the same common Phenomenon. And people in past who are exposed to these triggering factors as defined, their genetically inherited offsprings are then born with a tendency to this abnormal DNA chain growth and the rest of factors remained in their life such as smoking, sugar, exposure to radiation increases this tendency. For those who do not have this tendency from their fathers however, it takes longer years for developing cancer and in some cases as such, they never develop cancer due to not having a strong previous tendency arising from their ancestors. This is the absolute cause of cancer.

Remember always, there is nothing complicated in Science or universe. Everything is so simple that it has a simple physical reason behind it. The complexity is that either something is awaiting to be solved, or it is partially understood until complementary discoveries/inventions come. Today's unknowns or complicated mysteries is future's simples, just like before Penicilin discovery, people were dying due to infectious diseases.

If you need to name the very prime reason, I would tell the following: prime reason of cancer is in cells' failure to execute an order to die. Those cells will further refuse centralised regulatory orders and the "rebellion" spread around. The cancer becomes a sort of a parasite with only difference is that the organism does not recognise cancer cells as parasites and do not attack them.

Then different cancer has their own specifics, of course. The exact reason why the cells fall apart from central regulatory systems vary tremendously. Moreover cancer cells continue to evolve by they own, so one could argue that every cancer case is unique, despite the fact that common trends exist.

There will be a particular reason for that various causes.

Abnormal and uncontrolled proliferation of cells is the basic mechanism behind cancer development. The cause of proliferation varies , there is no single cause.

Many factors can contribute to cause cancers:

1. Viral infections

2. Exposure to radioactive materials

3. Exposure to carcinogenic chemicals

4. Consuming (eating, drinking, or smoking) items containing cancer inducing ingredients

5. Genetic factors

6. Factors that suppress hosts' immune system etc...

Exact mechanism can be due to genetic, aging, viral infections (HPV or hepatitis) , chemical exposure such as asbestos, smoking, excess alcohol and decreased immune function. As why would someone without any risk factors get cancer, it is yet unknown or idiopathic.

Hey Linto! Your question is indeed interesting but let me tell you the answer is not as simple as we expect it to be. But let me try to make it as simple as possible. Cancer is basically a disease which the normal inter and intra cellular signalling for a wrong. Normally, the proliferation, maturation, survival and death of a cell are regulated by a complex integrated signaling mechanisms. Any factor which interferes with these signaling cascades will result in formation of cancer. These factors act by bringing about mutations in the genome. These mutations occur at sites on DNA which regulate cell division, survival and death. Genes involved in cancer are of two types- tumor suppressor and proto oncogenes. A mutation in tumor suppressor gene will lead to loss of its function i.e. suppressing aberrant signaling in cells. If proto oncogenes undergo mutation, they enable the cells to proliferate without any control. Just one mutation isn't at all sufficient to make a tumor but a random set of mutations. These tumor cells initially hide themselves from the immune system so that they are not destroyed. As the cells keep proliferating and the size of tumor increases, the tumor cells develop the ability to modulate the immune response towards their favour. This ultimately results in an unchecked growth of a mass of cells with abnormal functioning.

As far as I think the unregulated behavioural changes in the cell is a result of "STRESS". Now these stress may be of any kind as stated by the members above. To maintain the normal regulation a regular routine should be exercise which first of include sleep. Now a days, people are going gadget freek which is an ultimate invitation to the electromagnetic threat. So I guess these are the primes and should be focused.

The main cause for causing cancer is generation of Free Radicals in the body which will alter the structure of the building block - DNA which will get mutated. According to a study using ESR spectrum, Cigarette smoke contains thousands of Free Radicals. Probably this may be the reason why the risk of lung cancer is more in smokers. Even environment pollution can cause skin cancer due to the generation of dangerous Free Radicals.

Cancer is a complex group of diseases caused by multiple environmental and genetic factors. Only few aetiological agents are termed causes like smoking and lung cancer. Most of the matrix of causes is not well understood. In many instance the behaviour of cancer is disturbing.
