Any type of defects and cracks. Which method gives accurate results in case of polymer matrix composites. Is any disadvantages using over the material.
I´d recommend X-ray computed microtomography (see for example Schilling et al. 2005). There are loads of papers using micro-CT for NDT of polymer matrix composites, both for cracks and pores. Synchrotron radiation micro-CT is an alternative if you´re lucky enough to have access to a synchrotron facilty.
Another alternative is dark-field X-ray imaging to non-destructively detect micro-cracks and porosity in PMCs (also in relatively large parts), see e.g. Conference Paper Non-Destructive Evaluation of Defects in Polymer Matrix Comp...
In addition to the tests mentioned earlier Resonance Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (RUS) can help you determine Internal Friction (which is a function of crack density) and Young's/Shear modulus.
Hi Linto, these are the NDT method you may consider in finding defects in polymer composites.
-ultrasonic C-scan technique .The C-scan image able to present the damaged regions on each layer; ultrasonic images of all delamination and other failure mechanisms at different layers on the same plane. But it is not possible to show the damages at each specific layers.
