The best quality of a good and efficient researcher is the will power. It's an evidence, no published report are necessary.
I can cite Luis H. Toledo-Pereyra: "interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge, recognition, scholarly approach, and integration. The characterization and understanding of these qualities would be extremely helpful to those who are beginning the exciting field of research."

In my opinion: never give up!!!!

The Ten Simple Rules from PLOS (see link 1) provides ideas on how to be a good researcher with respect to various key issues that all researchers are faced with (i.e. getting grants, getting published, organizing workshops, etc.) as well as on general issues like guidelines on doing your best research (see link 2).
Link to the PLOS collection of Ten Simple Rules is available at:

The researcher is to identify broad patterns and create a coherent study-line for the findings.A good researcher needs to take a broad perspective and try to identify trends to help organizations make good decisions and aware of the bigger picture, to take a broader approach and gauge future research plans based on trends to be more accurate.
Identify patterns and trends as exhaustively as possible, make more solid predictions about future conditions, sense practical, concerned with doing things and ideally improving the world.
Ethical phenomena are vague and uncertain, because ethical problems and dilemmas appear in those situations when we are uncertain about what to do. If we knew the proper course of action, then there would be no ethical problem
They are normative, which speaks for itself. Ethical demands about what people ought to do are treated as de facto beliefs in people’s minds.Ethical phenomena are qualitative, because they are about the qualities of actions, emotions and characters

Passion & Perseverance.
Passion serves as a driver to push the researcher continues moving forward / further & going deeper whereas perseverance serves as a motivator to influence the researcher stands up and continue the pursuit after facing repeated failures.
Toledo-Pereyra LH. Ten qualities of a good researcher. J Invest Surg. 2012 Aug;25(4):201-2.
Writing about the 10 Qualities of a Good Researcher represents a great responsibility since it is not simple to assemble in a concise manner all the important qualities of a good researcher. Knowing the difficulties lying ahead, I would like to suggest the following qualities: interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge, recognition, scholarly approach, and integration. The characterization and understanding of these qualities would be extremely helpful to those who are beginning the exciting field of research. To be a good researcher first requires the intention to be involved in research and immediately thereafter to show a dedicated interest to do the best research possible. From there we must accumulate the knowledge needed to advance the current ideas already existent in the research world. The intention of this writing is to introduce 10 qualities that I consider essential for a good researcher to succeed.
I think that there is a mistake: the qualkities are eleven instead of ten; you may add money availability to shop the full-text.

Ten qualities of a good researcher:
Interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge, recognition, scholarly approach, and integration.
I agree with dear Prof Shafig on the qualities he mentioned of a good researcher. I would like to add that a researcher must have intellectual curiosity. Curiosity is important for the experiments done by researcher in exploring different approaches and ideas.
To be a good researcher your mindset has to me explorative, than you have to arm your self with the main weapon that is knowledge of the field you are interested in. Second step, a lot of effort has to be put in making a good protocol (primary outcome, sec. outcome..) and hypothesis that you DO NOT change during the course of the study. Thirdly, again armed with knowledge, you have to learn how to interpret the good and the bad results. And finally, there is the statistics although many researchers do not like it you have to know the basics to be able to do a good research.
Students are expected to demonstrate

5 QUALITIES OF A GOOD RESEARCHER - very good blog on this issue!
http://simplyeducate.me/tag/featured/?lang=zh
A good researcher is that who take into account negative results while concluding the results. He must be honest enough to exhibit true results.
Before thinking of qualities is preferable to speak of a scientific thought, which is the foundation of life of a researcher, with some characteristics:
Obsession for discovering
Need for order and explanation
Science is not an occupation or enterprise is an attitude and a way of life
Always find that the universe is not the same
Understand the cosmos as a comprehensive study that has a totality and implicate order
Understand that all scientific initiative is based on two pillars, the search for truth and trust
Be clear that it is seeking the truth but not the certainty
It is interesting discussion on the qualities of a good researcher; I agree what is shared by other colleagues but I would like to add Ethical approach and selflessness
Researcher Development Framework (RDF) serve as a guide for the exploration of the skills required to become a good researcher!

Sincere, dedicated, zeal for revealing the ultimate truth of the nature, etc
Dear Salman Ahmed
I think that the respondents to this question may have enriched this subject before but I like is to promote some of the answers that I read by saying that it is by reading the previous sources and experience in scientific research I see that the Top 10 Qualities of a Good Researcher (required to be a good researcher) already mentioned here in some answers and also in the link below, I am here lists them with re-arranged according to their importance from my point of view, namely:
1. An analytical mind
2. The ability to stay calm
3. Systematic
4. Commitment
5. Quick thinker
6. Curiosity
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
8. A people person
9. Sympathetic
10. Intelligence
There is a published paper under title (Ten qualities of a good researcher) in this linke.
This article under the title (Good Qualities of a Researcher: A Note to Beginners) is also useful for more details about the qualities of good researcher.
All the best, Dear Salman.

http://www.science20.com/flexi_chem_teacher/blog/good_qualities_of_a_researcher_a_note_to_beginners-70065
1. An analytical mind
“As a market researcher you are constantly analysing a variety of factors. Why does the client ultimately want to do this research? What is the appropriate methodology? When should this research take place? What are the appropriate questions to ask and how? Why did the respondent say that? What are the findings telling us? Why are they telling us that? How do I best communicate the findings? etc. On a daily basis researchers must be able to take a step back and analyse the situation presented to them. The obvious answer is not necessarily the right one” (Gareth Hodgson)
“You have to be able to see the bigger picture as well as the detail. People often find it easier to do one or the other- it is a skilled researcher that can do both simultaneously” (Richard Walker)
2. A people person
“This is important for clients –buyers of research would rather work with professional AND friendly consultants. Also for respondents – to get the best out of interview / focus group participants” (Richard Walker)
3. The ability to stay calm
“It can be really stressful as a researcher sometimes, especially when you have pressing deadlines or are experiencing problems with a data set, for example. When these situations occur, you just have to keep focused and think logically – there will always be an end point, even if it doesn’t feel like it!” (Bethan Turner)
4. Intelligence
“Research requires critical analysis but most of all common sense” (Liz Brierley)
5. Curiosity
“You may have the necessary intelligence but if you are not curious enough then you won’t be passionate about delving deeper to unearth more insight” (Anthony Shephard)
“At the end of the day, the role of a market researcher is to find out about other people’s business and tell it to other people. To be a market researcher you have to have an inherent interest in what other people think (potentially about absolutely anything!), and the nosier you are, the greater depth of information you can extract” (Gareth Hodgson)
6. Quick thinker
“Things don’t always go to plan so you need to be able to think fast” (Anthony Shephard)
7. Commitment
“It’s a tough job – the hours can be long, the deadlines short” (Richard Walker)
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
“So different audiences can clearly understand the findings of the research and what it means for them” (Jo Iaconianni)
“You have to have excellent written communications and be fluent in the language of business” (Richard Walker)
9. Sympathetic
“Having a sympathetic ear when listening to some respondents’ moans and groans is always a good skill to have!” (Liz Brierley)
10. Systematic
“Check, check and check again. It sounds simple but I’ve definitely learnt that building in a proper amount of time for checking your work always pays dividends. This can be applied to all parts of the research process” (Bethan Turner)
“Attention to detail - the ability to ensure that data is accurately presented and reported” (Anthony Shephard)

I think researcher has Sincerity, Punctuality, positive attitude and off course tolerance power.
Enthusiasm for science, background knowledge, open mind, positive attitude and can asses the situation and provide creative ideas.......
There are some topics related to this issue of the researcher's qualities! Here are some of them that you may find useful.
As for me are:Creativity, intellectual curiosity, determination, knowledge, self-motivation, competitiveness, value interacting with others, humbleness, etc.
I hope this helps you

Thanks for asking this question Dr Salman. Well as the previous researchers have highlighted many features and cite certain links, I would like to say that , a good researcher must have patience, secondly sound knowledge regarding its own area of research, have faith on its own caliber, dedication towards its work, punctual, and he/she must be update himself/herself. Many researchers provide evidence. That is enough in my point of view.
I don't have a published report but can say what I look for in my co-workers. First is determination, as no matter how talented you are you will run into problems that take determination for success. Second, is ability to work well with others as most important problems are best approached with some collaboration or team work. Third is talent. It is not as hard as you might think to find people with talent. The truth is that I think that the world is full of talented failures who either lack determination or the ability to work with others.
In Medical Research
Researcher involved in collecting data from patients has an ethical duty to respect each individual participant’s autonomy. Any survey should be conducted in an ethical manner and one that accords with best research practice. Two important ethical issues to adhere to when conducting a survey are
The respondent’s right to confidentiality should always be respected and any legal requirements on data protection adhered to. In the majority of surveys, the patient should be fully informed about the aims of the survey, and the patient’s consent to participate in the survey must be obtained and recorded.

Here are some good threads which may be used for this research question!
https://www.researchgate.net/post/What_are_the_ideal_qualities_of_a_research_scholar/2
https://www.researchgate.net/post/What_qualities_of_charachter_should_Scientist_have
You should first define "good". Do you mean many publications in "good" journals, a good reputation, innovative work, a person ahead of its time? "Good" can mean many things. Does not mean that you are a good researcher if you publish a lot even in high-impact journals. There is too much dubious material in these journals that from time to time have to be retracted. Being "good" in science can mean a lot of things but in the end it boils probably one thing that could be used to distinguish a researcher: integrity. There are a lot of smart people in science, a lot of ambitious and driven personalities, survivors and a lot of people with integrity.
In times of reduced spending on science and overproduction of postdocs that want to enter the competitive market for academic positions and funding, integrity becomes the characteristic that distinguishes "good" from the rest, in my opinion (http://www.nature.com/jes/journal/v17/n2/full/7500573a.html).
Is integrity relevant? That depends on how much the scientific community and society accepts bending the rules. I think, it is still the backbone and core foundation of a research "career, if there is something like a career in science. And I think the responses from many of the contributors here mention a similar term, honesty, that reflects positively on the current status of science, or at least show that it's not all publish or perish etc.
Example in UK
New approach to researcher development, which aims to enhance capacity to build the UK workforce, develop world-class researchers and build research base. The RDS and RDF will contribute to researcher training and development in the UK by providing a strategic statement (RDS) and operational framework (RDF) to support the implementation of the Concord at t Support the Career Development of Researcher the QAA Code of practice for research degree programmes recommendations for postgraduate researchers and research staff.
Qualities of Researcher
https://www.vitae.ac.uk/vitae-publications/rdf-related/researcher-development-statement-rds-vitae.pdf
I agree with most of the above answers. However, all of them are useless without INTELLECTUAL HONESTY
eRespected, my opinion is that does not exist any kind of science artilcle that could describe qualities of good researcher. Researcher at first needs to be a human and everything else is less important!
I believe a researcher should have great background in his/her topic to be able to explain his/ her results. Moreover, researcher should be able to work with team and individual. Patience is an important quality the researcher.
The way i see it a good researcher must :
1) Have a great curiosity (is what give energy to research)
2) Be patient (No step in an investigation can be underestimated)
3) Be faitfull to the truth (When an investigation is well designed you must accept and defend your findings).
I think there are some dialogue on RG page about the same issue. The most important in my opinion before you do a research, you have set the goal to solve a problem. When you achieve this goal in a scientific way, you got a good research.
Being objective (relates to intellectual honesty), a quality that seems to have diminshed somewhat in recent years, particulaly in "journals" such as Science and Natture that do not provide details of the research
1. A good researcher shows an open mind about things.
2. A good researcher has a keen sense of things around him.
3. A good researcher likes to reflect or think about the things he encounters.
4. A good researcher must be intelligent enough to express his ideas.
5. A good researcher applies a systematic approach in assessing situations.
Something about fact that some academic fields place a high priority on qualities described as “brilliance” or “genius,” and that many people assume women don’t have those qualities! Have you been aware of such qualities!?
Gender gap in academia strongest in fields that emphasize 'brilliance' is a MUST read! I do expect hot discussion!
http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/1/15/gender-imbalanceacademia.html
Some of the qualities of a good researcher are as indicated below:
1. Must be ready to address issues that contribute to changes leading to development (e.g. reduce poverty gap).
2. Avoid laziness
3. Must be honest with data collection (wrong data gives wrong impression).
4. Must always seek the advice of senior researchers (i.e. collaborate with others to find answers to issues of concern).
5. Must be God fearing (do everything religious-avoid fidgeting data).
6. Sound in making judgement.
7. Must be ready to take corrections, face criticisms (e.g. presentations).
8. Must not be arrogant or aggressive.
9. Must be a good communicator (writes scientific reports well).

Sheku Max Kanteh

Integration and clarity of research. Make the scientific work more effective
CURIOSITY / ABILITY TO LEARN
A valued quality in researchers is intellectual curiosity and the willingness and ability to learn new things. This curiosity includes having an inquiring and open mind, as well as flexibility and adaptability.
Time management
The ideal researcher is organised, can plan their work, meets deadlines, pays attention to detail
The Qualities of a Good Qualitative Researcher - Associate Professor Paul Rhodes

a good researcher must have integrity which is based on honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility, which form the basis of all his research work. These values guide his behaviour and prevent him from doing things that will bring him down in the scientific world
Mentoring is an important quality of good researcher! " First and foremost, mentors in the sciences should help trainees develop as capable researchers. A mentor can contribute to the technical development of the trainee in many aspects of research, including methods, directions, creative thinking, completing academic or professional requirements, and scientific communication....A second essential need for trainees is career development and preparation for the job market. This includes an understanding of the current job market, opportunities to make contacts with leaders in the trainee's field of research, active introduction into the network of people working in his or her discipline, and an awareness of the range of career options. A mentor may also advise a new scientist on career moves in terms of applying for grants, what grants to apply for, and how to submit a strong grant proposal....Another focus of mentoring is the socialization of trainees. Such socialization should include guiding ethical development as well as fostering an understanding of the political, economic, and social elements of interacting within the academic community and instilling a sense of collegiality!" Mentoring on ethics and responsible conduct of research is one of the crucial job to be done!
http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/projects/rcr/rcr_mentoring/foundation/#3
Deal only with truth, Always have a plan, behave yourself to your goal, stick to your plan.
Attitudinal alignment and preparation is must, before venturing into research
If you are applying to work with professors at different universities who all share a specific research interest , to fit that specific school and adviser.
Stay focused, analyze and see if there is a real connectivity to Supervisor - University - Research - Stake holders etc., and your proposed contribution to it.

Dear Salman
On the lighter side of my response, your question appears more like an attorney's question in a court room asking responding researchers to defend themselves! I am defenseless as I am not a behavioral scientist with publications on human capabilities and behavioral patterns! I hope you are not going to sue me for a wrong or unsatisfactory response.
As far as I know, all normal human beings are endowed with a physical body (which itself is endowed with strength and stamina to carry out physical work) and a mind-intelligence-ego complex (the potential of this complex is infinite therefore, there is nothing a human being can not accomplish) that controls the bodily actions. Persons who are aware of this fact and recognize them as their assets and make best use of these two assets for their as well as societal benefit are successful irrespective of their field of interest e.g. science and technology, politics, religion, business, administration etc.
Until the end of 20th century, science mainly remained an individual effort and we can name several independent outstanding scientists in every field of science. In the 21st century, I feel science & technology has an edge over pure science and mostly it is team work/research. Therefore we have team leaders motivating and encouraging other team members (mostly younger, less experienced members or students and scholars) and often carrying out SWOT analysis, mid-course corrections etc. to achieve their goal in a time-bound manner and within the allocated budget/funds. Individual members therefore, should have the basic traits of working harmoniously in a team (team spirit), adjusting to other's needs and behaving in a manner that pleases the leader and other team members. The more experienced researchers should play a greater role in creating and maintaining the team spirit (mentoring) from the beginning till the end of the project.
An individual researcher with keen observation, ability to recognize and identify a contemporary (at the right time and right place) research project or problem, conceptualize the project in his/her mind, plan appropriate experimental protocols, conduct the experiments precisely , diligently collect/record the data, collate/tabulate the data, carry out mathematical/statistical analysis and interpret the results in the light of work carried out previously by other researchers and publish papers in high impact factor journals or patent the results has fair chances of success in his/her career. A researcher should also own responsibility for the success or failure of a research project.
In recent years, success of a researcher is measured by several indexes such as citation index, h-index, i-10 index, publications in high impact factor journals etc. By searching Google Scholar, Scopus, ResearchGate etc. highly successful scientists with high values can be identified. Therefore, a successful researcher should have the ability to publish in such journals that are often cited (some researchers feel that review articles have high citation indexes and do not reflect the research capabilities of a researcher) and attract other researchers. He should also have communication skills to present his results in a seminar or conference. Added to these it is needless to say that computer knowledge is an essential component of research. Researchers should know how to project their work to attract funding and public appreciation.
Salman, I think this is a subject fit for a thesis and many more traits or qualities can be added.
Thank you for your personal message desiring my opinion on the subject.
Best wishes and good luck.
Dear Salman
May I suggest you to follow another question "How research should be?" asked by another young and dynamic researcher Abdul Kayum. A number of experienced researchers shared their experiences and wisdom. The responses are very interesting, highly informative and will be useful to you.
Best wishes and good luck.
Dear Salman,
A good researcher has to follow and respect all the scientific ethics. In addition, I agree with all previous comments.
Good Luck.
I good researcher must be first a dreamer, with great imagination. He should be curious why something happens to be that way. He will dream about many possibilities. He keeps coming back to his question in mind.
A good researcher must be persistent. He will work on his problem alone, and quietly. He does not care much about what others say at one moment or another. He pushes for his project against head winds and makes progresses one little step at a time.
A great researcher must be focused. Only deep focus brings in deep insight. These days there are so much distraction and noise around us. People follow the trend like locusts. They don't have sufficient focus on the problem at his hand.
We are living behind a veil that prevents us seeing the truth. If you have all the above qualities, and someday God has mercy on you and reveal to you the secret. Only He can take off the veil. You will be the selected few of God's messenger.
Very interesting discussion; I feel in addition to Interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge, recognition, scholarly approach, integration and ethics, the ability to build/lead a team is one of the most important quality of a researcher. Knowing that research requires a teamwork a researcher can only be successful if he/she can ensure team building and collaboration.

Dear Salman
Thanks for sending this question to me. A lot has already being commented and the discussion is very interesting and knowledgeable. I think many of us working in academia and research is unaware about qualities of a good researcher. Briefly, in my opinion, a good researcher should have peace of mind, able to communicate effectively to others at different forums, doing mostly productive research, willing to publish research finding without falsification, be competitive and ready to find new horizons
Good researchers are
Honesty and ethics for the conduct of research. Truth in reporting observations and results.A Researcher without that is no more than a copy cat .
A sample of article about these qualities are below: below:http://blog.practicalethics.ox.ac.uk/2012/06/honesty-and-science/
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/resources/bioethics/whatis/
Dear Ahmad,
Many of the colleagues here have addressed most of the quality and personality of a good researcher. I would add more from personal experience qualities that involve trust, honesty, dedication, welcoming spirit to acquire knowledge, open mindless, thriving through difficulties, being able to produce much out of limited tools, helping others, maturity, patience, intellectually motivated, commitment toward excellence, can do attitude, self driven and self believe, and importantly ethical toward self and others.
Dear Ahmed, pleased to help you. This is my personal top list, although agreeing with colleagues' comments:
1. Dogged and communicative, to obtain funding and disseminate research
2. Studious, to investigate the subject
3. Accurate in the methods
4.Imaginative, to discuss the results
Dear Ahmad,
For me and ethical behavior and to be honest is the start point. To be methodical and positively stubborn can help to achieve the goals. Communication skills, leadership competencies, creativity and curiosity… It’s not easy to become a good researcher!
Good character
Positive peer pressure
Spirit of sacrifice for collective gains
There are so many qualities of a good researcher. "...Here are a few of the most pertinent ones:
http://www.blurtit.com/431516/what-are-the-qualities-of-a-good-researcher
Many important points in Ljubomir Jacić's answer should be considered for researchers.
The ethical conduct of research and surveys from professional bodies are listed below
Ethics in research is presumable. Ethics in research and scholarly publishing is subject of COPE - Committee On Publication Ethics! Many good resources are available for researchers!
http://publicationethics.org/resources/code-conduct
I will answer in a non conventional way:
-Honesty in relationship to yourself and all the other researchers.
-The sense of gratitude to all researchers that intersect your life in a way.
-Transparency (exhaustive).
-The joy to share (knowledge, original idea, to write papers and to expose Lectures/Conferences).
-The eagerness/passion to accomplish your vision.
-The willing to learn (each day, no matter of experience).
I think if the purpose of research is to advance knowledge (beyond theory to evidence-based fact) then integrity and objectivity are among the most important qualities of a good researcher.
The following points can't be described as evidence-based. They are most definitely my own opinion, and are not in any particular order.
Don't plagiarize
Recognize the work of colleagues
Honesty
Teamwork
Accept criticism and scientific scrutiny
Updated daily
Not allow gift authors
Critical and objective review to articles and research proyects
Researcher must be confident on his/her own work and have to be able to create evidence based his/her own story.
I agree with Dr. AL-HADDAD
Interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge, recognition, scholarly approach, and integration.
Solve local problems or global is the goal of researchers and whatever the results are effort must be estimated.
1, Absolute scientific integrity
2.Openness to learn
3.Focused curiosity
4.Not to be satisfied
5.Preparedness to work with scientists from other disciplines
6. Ability to identify scientists with integrity for collaboration
Hello!
I think it should be someone who has the vision to know that growth is due to their effort and ability but also of the group working with. I would like to end my activity look back and see how much they have grown personally and professionally my collaborators.
Thank you.
Marta
Marta: That is the quality of a good leader-in any field. Dr.Yellapragada Subbrao's life is an excellent example. Pl google and read his life and work. The greatest one-man contributor to biomedical field so far in the world!
Ina Non-experimental research the researcher has to be a passive agent, who observes, measures, and describes a phenomenon as it occurs or exists, that would be taxing.
Passion, integrity, devotion, the continuous joy to learn/teach, transparency, willingness,.....................all these associated with great generosity.
ِA researcher should be aware of the important health problems in his community. However, this depends on the setting and facilities provided. In poor or limited resources areas, I prefer to study common health problem to uncover missed or unstudied area that could be reflected on the service. Research for research to cover gaps in science is luxury. It needs assistance or fund that usually not affordable in poor or resource limited areas.
1- curiosity is the first dimension of a good researcher. If you are interested in a topic and have the motive to know more... then you will be a good researcher.
2- Research competencies... You need to know how to do research...
