How is polyethylene glycol (PEG) able to precipitate infectious viral particle ? So if the effectiveness of concentrating each virus is less than 100% - what are some potential sources that could reduce the viral titer ? and what improvements could made to limit such losses ?

Hi There,

PEG precipitates protein out of aqueous solutions and viruses are made of protein. I got my start in virology purifying virus with PEG precipitation. The major source of lost virus is user error, especially during the sucrose gradient or cushion. you just have to keep practicing and you'll eventually get it. Good Luck.
