As commonly known, bilirubin synthesis occurs in RES cells of the spleen, liver, and medullary tissue. Heme is both toxic and almost insoluble in water, so it is to be destroyed intracellularily, in the specialized cells where it is transported inside erythrocytes themselves. Where and how does the myoglobin degradation occur under physiological conditions? Can anybody share own experience or give a reference?
