I took some TEM images of a bacteria incubated with an antimicrobial peptide. The image shows lots of background structures that take two forms, one appears to be in the form of a ribbon. Is it possibly that the peptide is assembling to form this structure ? It is not there in the control before the addition of peptide and it seems to big to be sloughed bacterial components.
Usual peptide ribbon is much smaller than the one shown on your picture. By the way, magnification is pretty low but quality of image is not really good (too noisy). You should be able to get much better pictures. Also you may want to use another substrate (not holey carbon) and/or picture peptide solution without bacteria.

How big would you expect a ribbon to be ? I approximate these to be around 100 nm in width. Do you have any suggestion as to what else they could be ?
I adjusted the image (contrast etc) to better show the "peptide", in the original image bacteria show up well and there is far less background noise

We need some more information to interpret your image(s). As Vladimir said, the magnification is really small and the image quality is not good.
The width of peptide ribbons I would expect in the range of 10 – 20 nm. I have never worked with peptide ribbons, but I have done a lot of work on protein ribbons (doi:10.1074/jbc.M113.456012).
Please, can you send more details about sample preparation?
