I would like to get your feedback on deposing patent and delay publication versus publishing directly and preserve novelty (allowing greater chances to publish in high IF journals). Also, what would be most beneficial for a student, as patents often delay publication and block them from meeting presentation.
It depends on how you see it. I know some big name researchers hold off their publication to get a patent so that they can get enough, or secured, money to support their further studies. But, if you rely on research grants, to get it publicated probably will benefit your chance of success.
In academics, people want to publish first in a journal before going for a patent. Whereas industry people prefer patent than a journal publication. If a student wanted to continue his career in industry, it is better him/she to have patents rather than journal publications.
