The question is not that clear to me. The research today is becoming more focused, but discoveries can be unexpected. The funding has declined since the Vietnam War, but the research output has been a force of human inquiry. The instrumentation and the industrial advances to support research has helped. I think that the continuation of fundamental research feeds into the success of translational work. But basic research and translational medicine are interacting, and there is crossing of disciplines and collaboration that will speed advances.
