I am interested to peform 3D numerical simulation of offshore monopile-soil interaction(modeling Both soil and monopile with 3D eight noded brick elements) under high lateral loads and overturning moments . My concern is regarding monopile modeling that whats the more realistic way to model monopile? Either model the monopile as hollow structure and plug the soil into it Or model the monopile as complete solid structure(not hollow)???
Also whats the difference in both the approaches??

Hi Bilal,
I would start with an axis-symmetric approach. Further, due to relatively thin wall diameters, I would even consider using simple shell elements.
If the aim is to get static soil -structure interactions, then it makes sense to not plug the soil inside it .
However, if one has to perform a dynamic analysis of the structure , then you need to account for correct stiffness and mass. What would be great is to compare a filled and non-filled scenario and compare the results.

In my opinion it would be better to model, concrete element, as a pile with assumed diameter, of course also concerning weight and Young Modulus of pile material. But please take into consideration also a boundary element between the concrete and the soil. In most cases as a M-C model with reduced phi and cohesion parameters.
From my experience it comes that in non cohesive is easier to calculate but in cohesive from the other side You've got more accurate load- settlement curve for example.
FEM pile modeling is very complicated task, I wish You a lot of patience and good results.
