I have 2 datasets one is the adult in the houshold and the other is the child(ren). I'm trying to merge the child data to the adult data however there may be more than 1 child to an adult (many to 1)? Does anyone know how to do this in SPSS version 25?

This problem seems easier if using Excel. Firstly, you need to give each adult an ID code and fit their ID (keycode) for matching the children's table. Yes, SPSS is also OK. But I do think Excel is easier. Try to write Excel function. I do think there are many functions or tips can solve this problem. However, what you want to perform and output is depending on your purpose, I am not sure which function can be used. (if function or count function, etc.) I remember that SPSS has very similar functions as Excel. Anyway, find the keycode for matching these two tables.

In SPSS 25 you should use the examples in the one-to-many merge from Bruce and not try to do it with the menu from SPSS 25. I don't know what SPSS has done, but they have made a mess of it. It opens and closes workspaces and uses file to add instead of table. It was a lot easier in earlier versions. You need to use the many file (children in your case, sorted by merge ids) as active file and add the information of the one file (adults in your case sorted by merge ids).
I have the same problem. in Peter Moorer 's suggestion, you still need unique IDs in your active file, otherwise it won't match. one to many is not a problem in SPSS, many to one (like adding SES data to postal codes, which I do not want to do manually, really) is unfortunately. Anyone for a solution?
Nina Kupper , the use of the table option is specifically used to add aggregated data from another source (CBS, DUO) to your data file. Sort your cases on postal code or municipality number (GEMNR) and the data in outside source should be sorted on postal codes or GEMNR as well. I always use this to add data. It adds many to one data.
For example to add degree of urbanisation (CBS data) to your own data, you can use
MATCH FILES /FILE=*
/TABLE='D:\DATA\04.0 Externe Data\1.0 CBS\Urbanisatiegraad_2016.sav'
/BY GEMNR.
EXECUTE.
In this example both files have to be sorted on GEMNR (CBS code of mumucipality).
