"Benign effect of corruption which is often discussed in the literature is that corrupt payments supplement the income of workers whose wages are so low that they can hardly rely on them to support their families. This is particularly true of petty corruption in the form of ‘grease payments’ made to low-ranking government officials (although this also applies to the commercial sector) to ‘motivate’ them to perform their usual duties. The reasoning here is that these officials are not being asked to do anything illegal or improper; the payment simply ensures that they apply speed and diligence to their duties to avoid what is otherwise a slow pace of work. This practice has been described as follows: ‘In some respects, this is an informal ‘user pays’ mechanism, whereby the users of government services top up government workers’ salaries — those who use the service, pay for it.’It is, therefore, not surprising that poorly paid jobs in the police, immigration, customs and tax departments of some developing countries receive a disproportionately large number of applications for employment. At any rate, several studies have found a direct correlation between poverty and corruption.
Corruption distorts global business generally because transactions are not made on the basis of supply and demand and the efficient allocation of resources. Development projects, which may be vital to a country’s economic progress, could suffer as funds are diverted elsewhere. Those providing the development assistance may become frustrated and in the end may reduce or cut off their assistance. At the end of the day, it is the country as a whole which suffers and, in particular, the poor in the society. As the recent histories of Nigeria, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) have demonstrated, when corruption becomes pervasive, it can bring a country to its economic knees.
Corruption has harmful effects on the social and administrative systems of a country. As far as the latter is concerned, corruption undermines the effectiveness and efficiency of a government’s administrative machinery. For example, those responsible for issuing licences and permits may deliberately slow down the wheel of public administration so as to create an environment conducive to obtaining more ‘kickbacks’. Confidence in, and respect for, public services are eroded when corruption becomes a feature of a government’s administrative system. Corruption can also create serious social problems. When a perception is created that only some people are benefiting from the national wealth, because they are placed in ‘strategic positions’ in their jobs that provide them opportunities to accept corrupt payments, this no doubt leads to feelings of inequity and resentment. Over time, as this resentment builds up, it can ignite a national uprising of one kind or another, as recent events in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Indonesia and Russia have demonstrated."
Corruption means cheating, dishonesty and wrong doing. It is a pity and characteristic for present mainstream circumstances that such a question can be even asked.
By the way, troubles in the world mostly started with corruption.
CORRUPTION IS NEVER GOOD FOR BUSINESS AND SOCIETY. CORRUPTION LEADS TO FAILURE and the fall of empires, societies, as history teaches us. 'Before an empire collapses, it first erodes from within. The collapse may appear sudden, but the processes of internal rot hollowed out the resilience, resolve, purpose and vitality of the empire long before its final implosion.'
Corruption, embezzlement, fraud, these are all characteristics which exist everywhere. It is regrettably the way human nature functions, whether we like it or not. What successful economies do is keep it to a minimum. No one has ever eliminated any of that stuff.
No doubt corruption make frustration. If you make a society corrupt it is success for you. but mostly countries were captured by use of force and then societies destroyed. European did it quite successfully.

In the gangster age in Chicago, Al Capone saved the Italian community. His corruption helped keep people from starving to death. But as a whole, corruption may provide short-term benefits but the long-time and often irreversible impact of corruption breeds mistrust and eventually, hatred. Corruption eventually brings upon its' own demise.
I take the "against" side of the debate and argue that corruption only corrupts business and society. In the long run, those who promote the latter suffer the consequences of their actions by being caught and convicted or pass on their corrupt ways to other generations, who suffer the same fate. Corruption must be stopped.
Something is beneficial to social structures if it is either new so that we learn from it or it has to be a known truth that imapcts the structure for good. Any structure will be augmented to a better and bigger one when we increath truth in it, not falsehood. Falsehhod dibilitates structures, weakens and makes them impotent.
Corruption is a very known falsehood, wrongly acquiring resources by one person or few click members that were intended to benefit society and its healthy developments. No person will say weeds are good for farmers to gain more harvest, but they are the ones which grow faster, wrongly accessing minirals by their special accessing means, dibilitating the growth and proper production of cropes and let them die with no results, unless weeds are consumable which they are not. People who are corrupt are weeds of society, good only for themselves as weeds are.
It is indeed observed time and agin, the collosal damges corruption and ill business practices bring to society and the economy. The problems that are happening in the middle east and Afirica where humans are dying accross deserts, oceans, continents are not at all good for socuety but results of evil acts, corruption, falsehood and dictatorships.
Corruption is a deed of benefiting itself against benefiting the community. It is a cheating the others and society.
However corruptions have been established as a social characteristics and accepted by the society in some parts of the world. Such societies are underdeveloped in the world.
In India, there are some states where all the students are allowed to cheating in the examinations and to pass the examination so that the state should show good literacy therein. When vacancies are published and selections are made on marks such obtained, whole the society gets returns as incapable staffs in the offices.
The wrong never can be right. And corruptions are the biggest hindrance to the development and harmony in the society.
Corruption is the enemy of development, and of good governance. It must be got rid of. Both the government and the people at large must come together to achieve this national objective.
If you want to sell arms, you need to bribe officials to show how serious you are - to beat the competition. It is common practice. It will be corruption if found out (otherwise it is OK)
If on the other hand, a professor "buys" his tenure instead of submitting his credentials for approval, this kind of corruption should not be tolerated (but it happens)
I agree that corruption, itself, is not good for society; however, it can show where weaknesses are. If you observe that people are taking bribes, for instance, then it means that they are feeling undervalued in some way. If those weaknesses are addressed, then society improves.
Underestimated people should improve their quality and communication stamina. Sometimes people accept bribes due to their strong positions as they feel that no can trace him/her; if traced out - the other can't do against him/her.
Some people make the corruption as their way of life and earning.
Sometimes people give problems to others so that the affected person be miserable to give bribes. I know some officials of an university who returned the students telling that they reached without so and so documents. When students visited frequently, then they provided solution to pay bribes.
Corruption is not good for any society and any type of social activities. Corruption is something which some people do for their self interests and benefits without caring the harms and losses suffered by common people because of their activities.
Somebody wrote above she had no idea on corruption. I do not believe it. Unfortunately, corruption enmeshes all activity and relationships of our world and destroys the life. This is a manmade mind pest which is nourished by egoism, greed and the lack of ethics.
In no way, corruption can be good for business & society. Corruption, by default, is disasterous. It may bring some gains but ,in the long run, it will destroy the business as well as the society in a chain-like process or by a domino effect. Any one who loves his/her organization & country ought to work hard to fight against dishonesty, deceit, lies, hypocricy, and all the evil attitudes. You see how corrupt politicians have caused catastrophes & are making/fueling unnecessary futile wars in many parts of the world.
"It has often been said that power corrupts. But it is perhaps equally important to realize that weakness, too, corrupts. Power corrupts the few, while weakness corrupts the many. Hatred, malice, rudeness, intolerance, and suspicion are the faults of weakness. The resentment of the weak does not spring from any injustice done to them but from their sense of inadequacy and impotence. We cannot win the weak by sharing our wealth with them. They feel our generosity as oppression."
Corruption is not generated by only strength and weakness. It is personal character also. People praise the persons who benefit others in their good times, but do not harm in miserable condition.
In Mahabharata, there is a story of a Brahman family who collected grains for nurturing its family. When there was a famine once and no food available to them. He could collect very little grains. When food was ready, one guest reached in hunger. He gave his parts to him, but the guest was hungry yet. His wife, his son, his daughter and his daughter-in-law - all gave their parts to the guest. And all died due to hunger. The creator says they went to the Heaven with special care by the lord itself.
Where people maintain their morals, the society prospers. Rich and poor - equally may be in involved in corruptions.
But when a clerk becomes corrupt, the society gets little harm. But when a minister is corrupt then, big harms are there to the society. In same fashion, if all/most clerks are corrupt, then this harm is more than the harm made by a minister.
However if the society is awaken, then I think cases of corruptions should be less.
For business there may be short term gain, but sooner or later it will ruin business. For society it will definitely harmful and one must not entertain idea of profit by corruption.
Strange article! Read it! Power and corruption may be good for society! An evolutionary biology professor found that power and corruption may play a role in maintaining overall societal cooperation...
"Úbeda explained how it works:
"Law enforcers often enjoy privileges that allow them to avoid the full force of the law when they breach it. Law enforcing results in the general public abiding by the law. Thus law enforcers enjoy the benefits of a lawful society and are compensated for their law enforcing by being able to dodge the law," he said.
The researchers concluded that power and corruption benefit society; without law enforcers, individuals have less incentive to cooperate and without power and corruption, law enforcers have less incentive to do their job.
The researchers' findings have far-reaching implications. In biology, they may help explain corrupt behaviors in social insects. In economics, the findings may aid in formulating policies by providing insights on how to harness corruption to benefit society. In the field of psychology, the findings provide a justification to the correlation between power and corruption observed in humans."
If a politician earns money (by corruption), but spends it wisely and does not misuse it, then the corruption will not be harmful to the society. Generally it is observed that the money earned by corruption and another wrong means are used for maintaining costly life standards which make other people to starve.
In the time when kings ruled an area, some kings did a lot of things for his people despite they used all the wealth as it was his own.
Dear @Prabhat, the outcome of politicians who are corrupted, even they do spend all the earned money "wisely" and "for society" is not good. They earn a lot more, they earn political profit as a mandate for next political cycle. It is very bad for society in general! There is no positive outcome!
The modern science has a created an environment and need for humankind to be integrated to extract benefit of that. As individual capacity to store data and information is limited, therefore a number of brains are applied in co-operation which enforces the theory of co-existence. Knowledge of a single man is limited, but when knowledge of human society is composed, its output is enormous.
A systematic and systemic growth of society is essential, therefore new theories of integrity and fraternity were evolved. Science revolutionized the world. Social science gave a platform to evolve.
But human could not lifted itself beyond its self-orientations.
For the atmosphere of corruption, only politicians are not responsible. As common people make a culture and support and bear them.
When, an other person is annoyed due to low status of law & order in the society, very less people arise to help him. Each one of us think about ourselves.
Development of common attitude to prosper the society only can minimize the corruption. That is my view.
I personally corruption associated with something bad, so it sees in it a good site for either business or society. There are some occasions the lesser evil. But if the little evil can really do good, since from the very beginning is wrong?
It is sad that continues under cover different activities for the poor, the unemployed itp.przymyka eyes to this phenomenon.
